Venna – „Only“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

I would say that my new song, Only, and the EP it will be a part of, would pair well with a nice whiskey sour.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

‘Only’ is the third single I’ve released this year, and there are two yet to come to complete my EP, ‘Sugar Venom’, which will be out in its entirety on October 28, 2022.

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

I’m not sure I have one that I wish was true, but I do get a kick out of the “aliens built this” theories. The celebrity cloning theories are always fun too.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I’m a big fan of techwear, but I’d have to say that streetwear better describes the style of music and the people I think would enjoy my music.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

The ‘Sugar Venom’ EP, out October 28th, is a concept album about maneuvering a toxic relationship, written from the perspective of the abusive partner. I think people are too quick to write off their own harmful behaviours because they’re born from love, ie. jealousy, obsession, possessiveness. With these songs, I’m hoping to spark some introspection.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I wouldn’t necessarily call it a talent, but I love to write stories. I’m actually pursuing a creative writing certificate through UofT at the moment.

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

  1. I’m a writer first. My lyrics are very important to me, and I hope to share more of my writing some day.
  2. My sound and style have changed over the past few years, and I feel that the new stuff is a lot more true to who I want to be as an artist.
  3. My whole career started because, when I was three years old, I told my mom I wanted to be Michael Jackson when I grew up, so she started me in singing lessons.
  4. I draw most of my inspiration from stories. For example, the first single off of the ‘Sugar Venom’ EP, ‘Echo’, was heavily inspired by one of my favourite horror games, Little Nightmares.
  5. I really value connecting with people. I know I don’t have a huge fan base or anything like that, but the few people that do follow everything I do, and always listen and share the new music, I’m so incredibly grateful for them, and I love interacting with and getting to know them as people as well.

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I started vocal lessons at three years old, and continued with them for over a decade. For chunks of time, I studied piano and guitar as well. I was even writing stories before I could write myself; I used to sit my mom down and make her write for me as I told them to her. In junior high school, we had a poetry unit in English class, and I was inspired to start writing lyrics.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Nobody has ever asked me WHY I make music, and it’s a very simple answer, but I’d like to share it. It’s therapeutic. It’s something I have this call to do that I just can’t ignore, and sometimes that’s really hard, but I have to answer that call. I’m sure that’s how every artist feels, but I’m not sure most people really understand how affecting that call to create is, and how damaging it is to ignore it.
