SMALL FIRES – „Matador“ + Exclusive Interview

Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

We are Ben, Ruben and Lars from Small Fires, an indie pop band from Hamburg. We’ve been around since 2015 and have released an EP „One Beautiful Mess“ and our album „All This Noise“ so far. The new album „Stairwell“ will be released in May. More about us at https://smallfires.de/

please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

We have already released 2 singles from the new album „Stairwell“ this year, they are called „Referee“ and „Matador“. For Matador we shot a fancy video with the wonderful actress Klara Lange, which has a kind of science fictiony vibe to it. It was directed by the talented Sven Voss.

name 5 things we all should know about you as a band

1 reverberated guitars

2 narrative lyrics

3 electronic sound design

4 really cool dudes

5 but also shy dudes

What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

The Northface

What’s your songwriting process?

We usually start with a riff or sound that comes from Lars (guitar) and build grooves and harmony sequences around it. This always happens live in the rehearsal room, Lars on guitar, Ben on the electronic drum pad, Ruben on bass & synthesizer. Ben then adds the vocals a little later. In a second step we record everything and refine the arrangements in the studio with additional sound layers and more beat layers.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

If you mean the music industry: more courage and willingness to experiment, promotion of the live music scene in the smaller clubs, fairer payouts from the streaming services to the artists.

Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

Referee is a cry to all men to let go of the ridiculous, out-of-date notion of what a „man“ has to be. The song deals with the constant games and competitive macho bullshit that seeps into our unconscious minds and still plays a big part in society today.

And Matador (Single) describes a one-sided chase, a game you can’t win because someone else is making the rules; and just when you think you’ve figured them out, the rules keep changing, leaving you wondering why.

All of the topics are personal, but there is not always a global message.
