Quarry – „Wake me up“ – Exclusive Interview

1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

Hey, I’m Quarry! Artist, Songwriter, and lyrical romanticiser – I say if you’re a songwriter and you’re not getting high on your own supply then you’re doing it wrong.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I just released a new single called ‚Wake Me Up‘ that you should definitely listen to. It’s pop music but without any of the things I don’t like, so if you often find yourself wishing for something just a bit different then I’m gonna go ahead and recommend myself – shameless. Speaking of which, when I was making ‚Wake Me Up‘ with Kid Harpoon, he was telling me some stories about making the Harry Styles album which completely changed my perception of him as an artist. Harry’s doing it because he loves it, and I’ve got a lot of respect for that. It sounded like he had some of the best days of his life working on that album, and it’s hard not to like someone who’s just making music for the love of it and still gets all excited every time they write something new. I can relate.

As well as releasing new music I made a music video for ‚Wake Me Up‘ as well with the incredible Sophia Katyea and James Arden that you should definitely watch on Youtube if you want to get more of an idea of who I actually am. The words just seem to read a bit differently once you have more of an idea of who’s writing them.

There’s loads of other stuff to explore over at @quarrywastaken on instagram too. Behind the scenes footage, photos, artwork, interviews, tour announcemnets, new releases!

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

– I’m all about songs that mean something, and videos and artwork that are made for a good reason.

– I surround myself with people that keep it real and tell me the things I need to hear when I don’t want to hear them.

– I make music because it’s burning me from the inside out, and if I don’t make it real I’ll explode.

– I write all my own songs, but I work with other artists as well and help them to grab hold of that ghost. It’s like trying to remember a dream for some people. Right on the tip of their tongue and they just need a little help. We all lift each other up and I’ll always be there for the real ones, doing what I can to help them get where they need to go.

– I hope I die feeling unfullfilled with a list of things I still want to do. I want to be chasing that fire right till the very end.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Adam Jones – repurposing my British childhood to make something new!

5. Do you have bad habits? A guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit?

Yeah I used to find myself listening to the same podcasts over an over again. I had to just cut them out of my diet. I’m an all or nothing person so I try to stay focused as much as I can. There’s only enough time to truly dedicate yourself to one thing you love. Sorry Ricky, Steve and Karl.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

Reading body language is second-nature to me, so it’s really easy to tell what people are thinking most of the time. It’s definitely given me a lot of insight into the way we’re all connected to each other. I tell you though, it’s difficult to not be offended when you can tell someone’s lying to your face or judging you. But it’s often kinder to not say anything, and in reality I’m not bothered what people think about me anyway. I’m not doing this for the ones that don’t like me. I’m doing this for me, and I’m doing it for the people that get it, and that are going to care about what i’m doing one day. All I can do is make as much noise as possible and hope that one way or another those people find me.

7. Being on stage feels like….!

Home. It feels so natural to me. I don’t ever get nervous, but I do get that buzz of anticipation! I love looking people in the eye when I’m singing so there can be no doubt in their mind that it’s real.

8. Must Have – and No-Go in your Wardrobe! – Favorite Fashion Brand and Fragrance?

It’s hard to say must have, I think there’s so mamy ways to make so many different things work. So the only must haves for me would have to be something simple like a black belt and a brown belt. But I guess a no-go for me is anything that feels too mundane. Anything that drags me back into that world of normality where I was working at the sand quarry every day. I wasn’t wearing clothes that felt like me as often, and I just wanted to wear something loose and comfortable. But it saps away your energy and personally made me feel less like myself. I got rid of all those clothes and was much happier for it.

Favourite brand is Kid Super. Not because I wear it (though I do have one courtesy of Al Webber at The Other Songs! What a nice guy, stayed up late for the release to make sure he could get me a top as a gift. I love working with real people that genuinely care about what they do, and I don’t forget people like that). But I love the brand because of the attitude behind it, and the approach they take. He just comes across as a really genuine guy who loves what he does and is doing it for all the right reasons.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Surprisingly nobody has ever asked me why anyone should bother listening to my music or go out of their way to look me up. And my answer is that it’s the ones with the confidence to risk being s*** that you should pay attention to. And I can’t make you go and listen to my music, but aren’t you curious?
