Men and makeup: Miriam Jacks gives tips for a naturally well-groomed look

The beauty industry is changing. More and more men are relying on high-quality skin care, rich beard care and decorative cosmetics. Studies show men’s growing interest in cosmetic products; they provide exciting insights into purchasing habits, product preferences and the motivations behind men’s makeup consumption. Make-up artist and beauty expert Miriam Jacks also keeps an eye on these developments. That’s why her vegan brand also offers beauty products that care for men’s skin.

But what is the difference between men’s skin and women’s skin? Men’s skin is generally thicker and has higher collagen and elastin production. This gives the skin more strength and resistance to external influences. However, men’s skin also tends to produce more sebum, which can lead to an increased susceptibility to skin imperfections. In order to do justice to these differences, men’s skin needs special care products that both moisturize and regulate the oil content.

Skin care tips for men

Cleansing is key: A mild facial cleanser removes excess oil and dirt without drying out the skin. Miriam Jacks recommends using a peeling twice a week to remove dead skin cells. To keep the skin supple, a light, moisturizing cream for dry skin or a fluid for combination skin is ideal. In winter, pure squalane can also be used to combat dryness, feelings of tension and redness – e.g. B. after shaving – help. Of course, UV protection is also part of men’s care routine. It is crucial to protect against premature skin aging. On top of that, hydrating eye care is advisable to combat fine lines and wrinkles.

Concealer as a must-have for men

While skin care for men is becoming more and more established in society and in bathrooms, the topic of makeup for men is still taboo. “A concealer can be a game changer,” says Miriam Jacks, who invested in the cosmetics start-up maleup from Neuss in 2023. Maleup’s goal is to dispel prejudices and clichés surrounding masculinity and to combat toxic masculinity.

“Maleup’s first product is a vegan concealer – an all-rounder that every man can use,” comments Miriam Jacks. Her make-up tip for men: “Use concealer! The concealer should match the skin tone so that the result looks particularly natural. Before applying, an eye cream as a primer is ideal as it smoothes the skin and prevents the concealer from settling into the fine lines around the eyes. The concealer can then simply be gently tapped under the eye with your finger and should be worked in well. It only takes two minutes and you immediately look fresher, more alert and more well-groomed.

Maleup founders Esad Alper and Joel Selzener agree with their investor: “Men can and should take care of their skin and be free to experiment with makeup to boost their self-confidence. It’s about everyone feeling comfortable in their own skin – regardless of gender and stereotypes.“
