David Ost – „Attention“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

If it’s supposed to be alcohol free, I’m a big fan of Beck’s Blue! Otherwise go for an Espresso Martini and a cold

Pilsener on the side? Sounds a bit off…  I’m not that big of a cocktail person though

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

31st of August I’ve released my very first EP, called ‚Good Enough‘. It’s a seven track record and it pretty much sums up what my music can sound like. It’s out on all the streaming platforms but also available as a limited edition on Serenade, a digital pressing platform. https://serenade.co/@davidost/good-enough

You should definitely check out my youtube channel, there’s videos for Attention, Good Enough and Liar, as well a Live Session for the latter. I’m playing a couple of cool shows that you can check on my website, but no longer tour yet. Would love to though! If you’re a booker and you’re reading this, hit me up!

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

Haha wouldn’t it be cool if the Hollow Earth theory was true? An interior world underneath us – sure, why not!?

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

You’re wearing a long and massive peacoat and underneath something quite baggy with Docs or cheeky sneakers. You also put on a couple of androgynous accessories. You love folk, but you’re also into Rap and Alternative R&B.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

My Debut EP is an honest reflection on my upbringing in a heteronormative environment and the years that have gone by; the fear of living the wrong way and losing track of time in all the white noise. I’m dealing with topics that are still heavy on society’s stomach, such as toxic masculinity or depression, toxic relationships, paired with more personal coming-of-age stories. For me, this is just the beginning.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I have a bachelor of engineering and a master of science so I guess I’m good at pretending to know who I am 🙂 No, not really! But on that note, the talent might as well be having quit my old life and finally becoming a musician. That shite was scary!

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

  • I make alternative pop music, including influences from pretty much all genres I’ve been growing up with

  • I’m a late bloomer in music but all the more driven

  • Lyrics are as important to me as the music

  • I don’t actually know how to play the piano, I just press the keys that make a nice sound

  • I can sing both quite low and quite high 🙂

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

When I started out as a teen, I pretty much learned to play the guitar with John Mayer tunes or just trying to play songs I liked in general. I used to get hoarse super quickly, but when I started to sing stuff that I actually meant, it was gone quickly. So that seems to be the secret to singing haha. Writing songs that I eventually ended up liking came much later. I think it was not until 2018 that I wrote the first song I liked. At the end of the day I think it just took plenty of trial and error, nothing too magical 🙂

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Am I comparing myself way too much with others, also mainly because social media is such an important platform for artists to promote themselves?

Yes. Sometimes it’s a downward spiral that it takes days to get back on track and don’t actually quit. But that’s part of the journey eh!?
