Chrome Daphne – „There“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

Thanks for having us! We’re a producer/musician duo from Toronto, Canada.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

We just dropped our first single on March 10th! We’re looking forward to putting out our next single at the end of April/early May.

We don’t have a tour planned at the moment, but we’re in practise with the band and couldn’t be more excited to start performing now that the world is opening back up.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as a band?!

We met in elementary school – we actually accidentally broke a laptop screen together in class (and got away with it). We’ve been friends since, and reconnected as musicians over the pandemic. We’d been sharing beats and ideas back and forth, one day something clicked – and we’ve been making music since.

Before we formed Chrome Daphne, we were in very different musical headspaces. Chris was playing mostly metal and jazz,  while Jay was busy busking and serenading strangers in the Montréal metro.

Jay was on La Voix (the Québecois version of The Voice) a couple years ago and made it as far as the semi-finals! He didn’t speak a lick of French so it was an experience to say the least.

We both play a little of everything instruments-wise, and we like using samples as much as we  like to record live.

We’re into creating a vibe with our music as much as we are with our own spaces – since we started taking producing music seriously, we’ve noticed that we’re taking so much more care with our personal spaces/studios. I don’t think we’ve cared about having nice plants and lighting, cool art and comfy chairs before our home studios started to develop.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Cyclops from X-Men.

5. What’s your songwriting process?

We’ll usually start by sitting  in a room together and listening to whatever’s been inspiring us lately – we keep a playlist with hundreds of reference songs and we’ll just go through it until something strikes us.  We’ll try and build off of whatever spark we get and then by the time we go back to listen to our reference, it usually sounds nothing like it. But in a good way.

6. If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

The increasing emphasis on continuously pushing out social media content. It can be exhausting when all you want to do is focus on the music. We hate Instagram and Tiktok

7. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

Our most recent single “There”  feels like it came out at a great time – the song totally feels at home with the longer days and warming weather.

A lot of our songs come from a similar place – either about a love lost or fulfilled, or the journey that either of those brings. It feels good to sing and write about things that don’t feel like they can be easily expressed in any other medium. If there’s a message we want to put out: it’s worth exploring the feelings accompanying the moments that make our lives cinematic – moments that stick out in our memories for better or for worse.

8.  A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Whose one of your personal heroes?

We’re both hugely inspired by KAYTRANADA. His sound selection, the way his music bounces and you can just instantly recognize the sound. And he’s Canadian too, which we’re super proud of.
