Y’akoto – „WMYT“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

It’s my absolute pleasure. I would recommend drinking a Campari Spritz with a nice juicy piece of orange. You’re going to feel very sexy after listening to my new music.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I released “Secret” featuring Jay Bahd an upcoming rapper from Ghana in April. A song talking about being honest about love and choosing self preservation over selfless unconditional love. I’m into driving beats and intense bass themes atm. I call this new music era of mine the “Afro Garde” era, taken from the art description « Avant Garde » It simply means, ahead of it’s time. I moved back to Ghana to explore what music would come out of me if I lived there. We have a thriving club scene in Accra and musically it inspired me heavily. WMYT which I just released sounds futuristic and experimental. I love exploring sound and energy. And YES, there is more to come, but I want it to be a surprise, so I can’t give away too much.

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

Definitely the UFO theories. I mean I truly believe we are not alone. That would be arrogant of us to assume that we are the only ones dominating space. I firmly believe that different dimensions exist. It would be crazy if not. We are not that important and also not that intelligent as a species. Otherwise we wouldn’t self destruct like the way we do. Look at what we do to each other. Aliens must look down on us and shake their heads. I’ve been recording in California a lot the past two years and when you look up to the sky it definitely feels like we are not alone.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I personally believe that music is all about reinventing yourself and sound. All the greats like Prince, Madonna, David Bowie, constantly reinvented their sound and style. I simply cannot imagine myself repeating myself in fashion style and music my entire career just because it sells.
You have to adjust to the times you live in. Humans move on and evolve. So do I, and it’s crucial for me to enjoy the process.

Fashion houses who constantly transform their styles but consistently offer the same quality and experience would be a good comparison. I like the sass and femininity of Versace and the classy creativity of Chanel. I also like how Louis Vuitton is constantly bringing in creative new people. I’m so excited to see what Pharrell Williams will do to the brand.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

The message stays the same. Find that self love and preservation that keeps you going. I see too many people compromising their joy away. Self – belief and love has never become more essential in a world with so much information and fabricated lifestyles. I practice radical acceptance. Somethings are how they are. Find a way through it. Come out the other side, stronger and wiser.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

That’s a nice question. Apart from creating and making music I would call myself a professional listener. In 2021 I created the listening session for my fans and me. They can tune in for a 30 min Zoom session with me and discuss anything they want. Some play me songs they’ve written, some just talk about their life, some just want my feedback on something they are working on.

People all over the world want to be heard and seen. I realised that and became a professional listener. I do not give advice. I just listen. I don’t judge. I just listen and make them feel good. It’s a beautiful job. I’m thinking of expanding it into a bigger business. Not everyone wants or needs therapy. Some just want someone to talk to who is unbiased and has a more creative approach.

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

1 I love books
2 I don’t believe in limitations
3 I speak three languages fluently
4 The Matrix is my favourite Movie
5 I meditate

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I think just by doing it. I’ve been standing on stage since I was 13..  I never thought too deeply about music. I always did it. It’s an extension of my personality. Without music I would not exist.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

I feel like people have asked me everything throughout my career! Lol! Okay maybe this:

How do you like your eggs?

Hard boiled pls! There is nothing worse for me than a runny egg!
