Die True-Crime-Serie beleuchtet den Fall des britischen Serienmörders Peter Sutcliffe, der zwischen 1975 und 1980 mindestens 13 Frauen ermordete und acht weitere teils lebensgefährlich verletzte.
Im Fokus des Krimi-Dramas stehen nicht nur die langwierige Fahndung nach dem Täter und die Probleme bei der Ermittlung, die ihren Ursprung im damaligen frauenfeindlichen und rassistischen Gesellschaftsklima hatten, sondern auch die Traumata, die die Verbrechen bei den Überlebenden sowie den Angehörigen der Opfer ausgelöst haben.
Die Jagd nach dem Serienkiller erwies sich als eine der größten und teuersten Polizeioperationen in der Geschichte Großbritanniens. „The Long Shadow“ wirft einen völlig neuen Blick auf diese gut dokumentierte Geschichte. Deutlich wird vor allem der ungeheuer lange Schatten, den ein Verbrechen werfen kann.
Nach dem dreiteiligen Crime-Drama „Des“, das unter anderem mit einem International Emmy ausgezeichnet wurde, ist „The Long Shadow“ die
nächste Regie-Arbeit von BAFTA-Gewinner Lewis Arnold über einen historischen britischen Kriminalfall. Der Regisseur hat zudem bereits mit Serien wie „Time“ und „Broadchurch“ reichlich Krimi-Erfahrung gesammelt. Geschrieben wurde die Serie von dem preisgekrönten Drehbuchautor George Kay („Hijack“), in den Hauptrollen sind u.a. David Morrissey („The Walking Dead“) und Katherine Kelly („Coronation Street“) zu sehen.
