The “First OMEGA in Space” is celebrating its vintage comeback

These details obviously caught the attention of NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra, who purchased the timepiece for himself and wore it to the launch of the Mercury program’s Sigma 7 mission on October 3, 1962. This significant moment gave CK 2998 its nickname “The First OMEGA in Space” and marked the beginning of OMEGA’s role in space exploration, for which the brand is still famous today.

Since then, the CK 2998 has enjoyed great popularity among watch lovers and Speedmaster fans worldwide. The latest revised models embody the same style of the second design generation from 1959 and feature a symmetrical 39.70 mm case made of polished and brushed stainless steel.

The dark bezel ring is made of black aluminum and features the traditional Speedmaster tachymeter scale including the “dot above 90” for which the first Speedmaster models are known.

The grey-blue dial beneath the brand new hesalite-like sapphire crystal has been treated with a CVD coating to reproduce the tone of some CK 2998 watches manufactured in the 1960s. In addition to the hour markers and the “alpha” hours and minutes hands filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, the central “stick” seconds hand features a white finish that matches the printed markers.

In keeping with OMEGA’s brand legacy, the watch features two OMEGA Vintage logos, one on the dial and the second on the crown. The historical homage continues on the case back, which OMEGA has decorated with a seahorse medallion and the engravings “SPEEDMASTER”, “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962”.

As in space travel, spectacular innovations have also taken place in watchmaking since the 1960s. Each watch in this collection is powered by a Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 3861, bringing it up to date. This modern version of the 321 caliber, which was also used in the original watches, also offers the highest current standards in terms of precision, performance and magnetic resistance.

There are three new models to choose from. “The first OMEGA in space” can be combined with a black or brown leather strap with clasp or with an all-metal flat link bracelet with OMEGA’s patented comfort clasp.

Each watch comes in a special presentation box with a «LEGENDARY MOONWATCH» brochure inside.
