The art of making coffee: 5 tips from Moccamaster

For many coffee lovers, brewing coffee is an essential part of their morning routine. But what is the secret to a perfect cup of coffee? Which coffee beans are best to choose? Is coffee machine maintenance important? Moccamaster, the iconic brand with colorful filter coffee machines, reveals five golden tips for making the tastiest coffee.

1/ Grind yourself for less loss of taste

The perfect cup of black gold starts with the right coffee beans: In order to best preserve the fresh taste of the beans, they should be freshly ground and of the best quality.

For the best bean quality, a visit to a coffee shop or roastery is recommended. Anyone who is not only interested in good taste but also wants to act responsibly choose sustainably produced and fairly traded beans.

Bonus: When buying outside of coffee shops, pay attention to the roasting date on the packaging, this provides information about the freshness of the beans.

2/ The power of clean water

Coffee consists of more than 98% water, so it is important that fresh and clean water is used for a tasty cup of coffee. It is therefore best not to fill the water tank until the coffee is actually prepared. The quality of the water also influences the taste of the coffee. Soft water gives the coffee a lighter body and is more acidic. With hard water, on the other hand, the coffee becomes thicker and tastes rather bland.

Bonus: To avoid negatively affecting the coffee taste, please do not use tap water with a strong chlorine or mineral taste. Filtered water is best for a taste that is as neutral as possible.

3/ Pure taste with white filter paper

When looking for the right filter paper, many people choose the classic, brown version. However, these filters do not do the taste of the coffee any favors; they can even leave a papery aftertaste. White filter paper is therefore always the better option.

Bonus: White filter paper is just as environmentally friendly as the brown version because it is bleached with natural acids. This makes it harmless to people and the environment. Filter bags can easily be thrown into the organic waste bin.

4/ The ideal ratio of water to coffee

Coffee is mostly water, but what is the ideal ratio? Typically, 60 grams of ground coffee per 1 liter is recommended, although you can adjust the ratio to suit your own taste. It is important that this ratio varies depending on the method of preparation: with espresso, for example, the ratio of coffee to water is higher than with filter coffee.

Bonus: Lightly roasted coffee or coarsely ground coffee can make the taste milder and cause you to need more coffee

5/ Care is half the battle

To ensure that your coffee tastes great, it is important to take care of the coffee machine. This also contributes to a longer service life of the machine. Regular descaling is important to avoid limescale deposits. Biological descaling agents such as vinegar or products based on citric acid are not suitable for this as they are very aggressive and can damage the coffee machine. Professional descaling agents, such as “Durgol Universal Quick Descaler”, are more suitable. Here’s how to do it correctly: Pour 1 to 2 cups of descaler into the water tank, dilute it with the same amount of water and turn on your coffee machine. After descaling, run your coffee machine two more times with a full water tank to rinse, et voilà!

Bonus: Did you know that it’s best to descale your coffee machine after 100 brews?
