Royal Oak – „A Song For Ya“ + Exclusive Interview

Q: Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

A: Unscrew your favourite bottle of cheap wine and dive in 🙂

Q: Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

A; We just dropped our newest single „A Song For Ya“ on January 24 and we’re super jazzed about it. It’s a pop punk-inspired song about a bad breakup our bass player went through a few years ago. There’s a kinda „F you, I’m better off now“ vibe that we think will resonate with a lot of people.

This is now our fifth single in the last year or so. We have a bunch of other songs in the bank and they’ll all come together as an album sometime later this year.

Q: Name 5 things we all should know about you as a band?

1. We’ve known each other since we were like five years old.

2. We started as an indie band but have slowly transformed (sold out?) and now we make pop music.

3. Technically, our first show together was as a Soundgarden tribute band.

4. We’re all big foodies who love cooking (and eating) as much as we love music.

5. If we weren’t making music, we’d probably be playing Super Smash Bros non-stop.

Q: What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

A: Did you ever see that show Wizards of Waverly Place? There’s a character named Harper that wears a different, crazy outfit every day. That’s us—always trying on a new style to mix it up.

Q: We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

A: We’re hopeful that the multiverse is real. Maybe there’s a universe where we’re really, really rich and successful.

Q: If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

A: Honestly this is a tough question. It feels like the music industry is kinda broken in a lot of ways, but it seems like any big changes would make the whole thing fall apart.

More awesome live music venues would be a start. We’re lucky enough to have some great spots in Vancouver but there just needs to be more places to see shows and meet fans and all that.

Q: Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

A: In one way or another, we tend to write love songs. Whether they’re about the first inklings of a relationship or that comfy feeling you get from being with someone long term, that’s just the subject matter that comes naturally to us. In the case of „A Song For Ya“, we kinda took that topic in the other direction, but you can’t write a breakup song without having a heart to break first.

Q: A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

A: No one’s ever asked much about our songwriting process and how we resolve creative differences, and there’s actually a fun answer.

We’ve always been very democratic with our process—there’s no “leader” when it comes to making creative choices. So if we disagree on something, we put it to a vote. When it’s 2 vs 2, we call it a “Royal Oak split”. Then both sides really need to argue their case and try to sway the others. That way, everyone’s happy (most of the time).
