Rory Powers – „Stories“ + Exclusive Interview

Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

Great question. If you’re talking non-alcoholic, I’d recommend an iced cold brew coffee. My tracks are pretty high energy so that caffeine boost will help. For alcohol, get yourself a shot of something strong, because you’re going to want to party and get emotional at the same time.

Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

My debut single Stories just came out, it’s from my debut EP out next year. I released a video too that plays with the idea of stories on social media, so the entire video is made up of Instagram stories. It’s trippy. I can’t wait to take the record on tour in 2023, starting in the UK and then Europe.

We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

I heard an old theory that the earth is actually hollow and that there are humans that live inside it, personally I want that one to be true. Maybe I could shoot my next video down there…

What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Right now my style bounces between streetwear and a lot of vintage clothes. I just got back from Seoul in South Korea and the fashion out there is amazing. K-pop is a big influence on my music so I’d be lying if that ‘look’ wasn’t an influence on my music.

Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

My songs cover a lot of struggles that I, and I think a lot of younger people are dealing with right now. Expectations VS reality, the sensation of being ‘too online’, feeling burnout but not being able to slow down.

I’ve taken a lot of my frustrations from those struggles and tried to rechannel them into the energy of the songs. You end up with these high-energy, electronic pop songs talking about problems I think a lot of young people are dealing with today.

‘Stories’ in particular is about relationships. How we idealize people and the reality of who they are. The feeling of chasing something that isn’t there. Similar to burnout, what happens when a broken relationship is pushed too far?

Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I don’t know if it’s a special talent but caffeine doesn’t affect me. I’ll drink a Monster energy right before bed. It’s pretty handy for late night music writing.

Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

I was born in America but grew up in Northern Ireland in the punk rock scene

My songs are produced with my childhood friend, we’ve been making music together since we were kids.

I record my melodies on my voice notes app as soon as they pop into my head (I think there’s over 200 in there right now)

Because I started making music in my bedroom, I do everything myself – writing lyrics, creating the beats and sound design, shooting and editing music videos.

I live in London now but I’m heavily influenced by music around the world including J-pop and K-pop.

How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I’ve been singing and writing music ever since my Dad bought me my first guitar as a kid. He taught me how to play the James Bond theme and I was hooked. A took a few music lessons as a kid but honestly I learnt most of what I know from the internet. Youtube tutorials, forums, ect. I remember after teaching myself to play piano for years I eventually went to lessons and the instructor was like, “you’re really good, but you’re doing everything completely wrong.” I kinda liked that.

A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Since I’m a gamer, the question I want to be asked is: If you could write music for any videogame what would it be?

I’d go back in time and write music for Snowboard Kids on N64, granted the music is already perfect but it’s one of my favourite games of all time and I think I could make some insane fast retro synth music.
