Kelvin Jones – “Cry A Little Less” + Exclusive Interview

Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

Hey! I’m Kelvin Jones, a Zimbwean born singer-songwriter. You might know me from my songs, Call You Home, Only Thing We Know and Love To Go.

Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

My new single, Cry A Little Less is out now! I wrote it at one of the lowest points in my life and it has gone quite some way in healing me. I’m currently working on my new album, This Too Shall Last, which comes out 25th February! In my album I express love, loss, struggle for identity, escape and all through the lens of someone gladly unsure. I can’t wait to go on tour in autumn next year, it’s gonna be my biggest tour yet, but more importantly, I believe that after the album release, it’s going to be a tour full of connection.

Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

– I play guitar, piano, and a bit of bass, but I’m at home at most on the guitar which feels like an extension of myself

– I don’t believe a song is finished until I’ve played it live. The response from the audience is always the missing piece

– I produce my own songs. This is because I feel most connected to a song when I know every inch of it

– I believe the hardest thing to be as an artist, and equally the most important, is to be honest.

– I don’t see music as colours, but I do see music as times of day. Like some songs are clearly 2am to me

What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I wear ripped clothes a lot and I think actually that style describes me and my music quite well. That is to say, imperfect, a bit roughed up, some people don’t get it and others adore it

Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

The strongest themes that have stuck with me are love and the loss of it, identity search, and fear. I’d say each of my songs can be traced to one or more of these core topics. Some songs might be about loving someone as much as I could but the core of it is really fear of losing them for example. My message is to try to be as honest about the things that scare you/hurt you/make you feel insecure as possible

Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I play quite a bit of football when I get the time. I like to think I’m still quite good, though my stamina is laughable at this point.

Being on stage feels like….!

It feels like running on a treadmill just a little bit faster than you probably should be running. Does that make sense? It’s exciting because you feel superhuman, but it’s also a bit scary because it feels like you could fall at any second. It’s an adrenaline rush. It’s so pure. It’s so direct, there’s no delay. It’s like using an ethernet cable, no wifi delay, just direct immediate connection

How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

By being bad for a long time before too many people knew me. There’s nothing more to it than just spending hours and hours sucking. Countless terrible performances, countless horrible songs written, and countless missed chords. And honestly, I still use that. Whenever I realise I haven’t failed in a while, that’s a sign that I’m not pushing to try something new

A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

What does your family mean to your music? The support I get from my family and girlfriend is everything to me. Being so vulnerable means that sometimes you come back with a bruised heart and that’s just part of it. You can’t always pick yourself up so having a support system that gets me back on my feet when I’m down is absolutely everything to me
