JAY BLANES – ‘To the Moonlight’ + Exclusive Interview

Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

I’m a a 24-year-old singer-songwriter and producer living in London and born near Barcelona. As a result, I infuse my passion for indie, pop and disco with my Latin roots.

Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

Right now I’m promoting my new single To the Moonlight, but this is just the beginning! In a few weeks I’ll release two more singles, before I drop the full EP. Shortly after I’ll start a small tour around the UK and potentially Europe, so stay tuned!

For the first time I have fully embraced my Spanish roots and infused them with my love for British and American indie pop. What I ended up with is a „Señorita“ style production and the beginning of a new era for me!

To celebrate the release, I got myself out of the comfort zone and set the challenge to learn a choreography for the music video. I was very lucky to find Rachel Kearon (choreographer), Zoë Slatter (dancer) and Carys Hughes (videographer). They really made it true (them and all those hours I rehearsed in the parking lot on my own lol). You can expect a couple more videos for the coming releases!

Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

I believe in honesty, passion, and sensitivity, those are my core values. I have never been afraid to cry in public and show my vulnerabilities, I believe that makes us stronger. I don’t see the point in lies and big drama, I’m always sincere. However, I do live my life passionately, doing what I love and loving the people around me.

I am at a turning point in my career! I recently found my sound and identity and there is a lot of music to come! To the Moonlight is the first piece of the puzzle!

I am completely DIY, so I write, produce, record, mix, master, release, edit the music videos,… all by myself. I believe this adds to the value of my creations.

I busked for a year, first in Santa Monica (LA) and then in Trafalgar Square. That really made me grow as an artist.

My music has been impacted by a journey I recently took to cope with an anxiety syndrome. I have been learning about mindfulness and self-awareness and there’s a long way to go. I’m happy to be sharing that with my fans and shedding some light into mental health stigmas.

What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Most of the coolest clothes I own are second-hand garments I bought in London or Amsterdam, from the 80s! However, if I have to pick a brand, I do love Timberland. They are environmentally conscious, have very comfortable pieces and are close to nature, just as I am.

Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

I have always written about my own strong emotions, which, most of the time, have to do with love. It can be romantic love, but it is also friendship and family love some times. Furthermore, as I just mentioned, because I am coping with anxiety, I have also been writing about living in the present, breathing and letting go recently.

Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I have always loved photography and videography. This is why I direct and produce my own music videos! I was also pretty good at my business degree, but music takes most of my mental space.

7. Being on stage feels like….!

Riding on a rollercoaster! Or going out on a date!

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I learned how to play the piano by taking classical lessons from age 7. Then I signed up for electric guitar lessons. When it comes to singing, writing, producing, mixing and all my other skills, it has always been trial and error and high standards! I am self-taught.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Which is your favourite Avenger? If we don’t count Iron Man (it would be too easy), I would say Dr Strange or Spider-Man!
