Hugo Joyce – „Nervous“ + Exclusive Interview

1.Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

Hey, no worries. Thanks for having me! I’m Hugo Joyce, a singer songwriter from North East London.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I dropped my debut single “Nervous’ on the 22.10.2021, which is available on all digital platforms! Last Friday I released the Acoustic version on Youtube, which was filmed live at the amazing Craxton Studios. In addition, this Monday I’m finally back performing live at ‚Pizza Express Live‘ in Holborn supporting the incredible Emily Craig.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

  1. I’m a singer songwriter, where I write for myself and other artists.
  2. I write all my songs alongside my writing partner Tom Althorpe.
  3. I can play the Piano and Guitar.
  4. My main musical influences growing up were Elton John, Carole King and Phil Collins. In more recent times, artists like Adele, John Legend and James Bay have inspired me a lot.
  5. I have just released my debut Single ‘Nervous’ and in the new year I will be releasing more music so stay tuned!

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I’ve recently stumbled across a clothing brand called Percival Clothing. They started in East London and their focus is producing classic British pieces.  I feel that is what I’m trying to do with my music. I use real instruments for the core of my tracks, which creates this classic, timeless sound but then I utilise digital elements bringing the music into the modern era.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

I like to write about relationships. I tend to write from personal experiences but I can take inspiration from friends, family, films or everyday life. My main aim when writing lyrics is to make them as relatable as possible.  For example, my debut single ‘Nervous’ is written about that feeling you get when you first meet someone special. That excitement, rush and buzz you get when you know this person is about to change your life.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

Aside from music I’m pretty sporty. I love to play most sports, but mostly Football, Tennis and Golf. I also love food and I love cooking. I love coming up with recipes and trying new food, I wouldn’t say it’s a talent but I’m pretty good!

7. Being on stage feels like….!

Nothing you can describe. It’s exhilarating, nerve-racking and addictive. No better feeling than singing songs to an attentive audience and hearing their feedback. Hearing people say how they can relate to something that you have created is a feeling you can’t replicate.

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I started writing lyrics in primary school. This carried on throughout my school years. However, my songwriting came later. I first started learning jazz saxophone and I played that up until the age of 14. It was then at 14 I decided to pack that in and learn the piano so that I could match music to my lyrics. From learning saxophone I knew how to read music, I also knew the basics of piano, so I would spend most evenings practicing and honing my craft. Soon after I wrote my first song and the rest is history.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

What’s something you are proud of?

For about 6 months+ I volunteered at the Mental Health Charity ‘Mind.’ I specifically worked on a project where we took an old wasteland in the grounds of Mind turning it into a working allotment. Here I formed friendships with individuals who were suffering from Mental Health issues. I met some incredibly inspiring people, listened to their stories and learnt a hell of a lot.  These sessions are so important to these peoples lives and to be part of that is something I’m really proud of. Not only that, I’d love to use music and be able build a platform so I can carry on supporting Mind and helping those in need.
