Gian Varela – „Faces“ + Exclusive Interview

1- What kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

I would definitely drink the “Tormenta Negra”, it’s a Bacardi drink with rum and it’s amazing, one of my favorite drinks now and it’s a very refreshing rum drink but is very unique also. I think that’s the drink that you want to be drinking for this and of course in Spanish, you got to look it up like that “Tormenta Negra”

2- Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

Well, “Faces” is already out, a very deep record, then “Lo Que Siento” with Tom Enzy is also out and it’s a spicy, dance floor wrecking Latin Tech House record. My Ep, my first EP “L.O.C. La Otra Cultura” meaning “The Other Culture” it’s coming out in May, it’s going to be 6 records, 2 new records, and it’s really really going to rock you. In terms of tour dates and show we’re going to be traveling the world, we’ve got some shows in Mexico, some show in the US in Miami, we’ve got some shows in Ecuador, Panama, Colombia, we’re moving around and we’re most likely also going to be spending a lot of time in Asia, I hope so. And then, we’re also working on new videos, in the past I used to like release a lot of music videos for my records I guess for this House records that I’m releasing we haven’t done that too much just cause of logistics but we’re going to get back to that.

3- We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example, Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

I don’t know if it is a conspiracy theory but I love the theory that aliens are like supervising us, just to make sure we don’t fuck up, cause that would mean there are so many universes and galaxies with so many different planets and it’s like we would become a Guardians of The Galaxy or Star Wars universe like imagine as an artist like “Hey, I have a gig on Earth today but next month I got to go to Mars and Venus for two other shows” right or some other crazy different planet and now you just don’t have like human fans but you have alien fans and it’s like intergalactic music, how crazy would that be?! I would love that!

4- What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I would go with two, Givenchy, because of the higher end very elegant clothing and a bit more on edge when it comes to the suits and the very formal apparel but then they got some very bold clothes that are also representative of my music. And then Off-White for the day to day I’d say cause it’s that urban streetwear that’s still high- end fashion but at the same time it’s comfortable, you can wear Off-White stuff in your house to hang out if you’re like super into Off-White.

5- Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

Some songs are deep you know “Faces” is a song that really speaks about how somebody can fight with who he is and try to discover himself way more, it’s a very powerful record and it’s something that I’ve been through and so many people have been through also that it’s a very connective record. But then you got other records of mine that are more about a concept like “Lo Que Siento” which is just I wanted to do a sexy record, I wanted to have a girl that was reading a poem on top of some really sexy brass and then the drop is just driving, some records are for the dancefloor and “Lo Que Siento” is one of them.

6- Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I’ve always thought of myself as an extremely creative person, I don’t only produce music but I direct music videos, I create concepts for music videos, I draw, I design, anything that has to do with creating things I really love doing that since I was a little kid. Funny enough but I actually work as a creative consultant for anybody that wants to hire me like that.

7-  Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

  • –  First one is, I was born in Panama and I always like to represent the Latino flag for all the Latin communities from Mexico all the way down to Argentina, that’s something very important for me.
  • –  Two, I’m very passionate as a person and as an artist and everything I do, from my music to my morals and my beliefs and everything. I think you got to do things 100% and defend them to 100% if you truly believe them.
  • –  Three, I don’t drink. Let me rephrase that, I TRY not to drink, I try my best, I swear. But I do love to celebrate, so when there are things to celebrate, that’s my weak spot. I try not to drink just to drink you know? I think one needs to be healthy in this touring world and this touring life.
  • –  Four, I’m a very business-oriented person, I own a liquor distribution company, a marketing agency, and a very big amount of festivals and events back home in Panama.
  • –  Five, I love videogames, during the pandemic we started streaming on Twitch with the fans and it was so amazing. I have to go back to that certain point and be able to play some more with fans.

8-  How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

My mother taught me how to be a DJ, she taught me what the BPM was, how to switch records, you know, when I was younger, I was able to buy this little Ion DJ System for $100 bucks. And that taught me my basics and then bit by bit I just went on learning by myself and by people who would just teach me tips and tricks and watching Youtube videos and stuff.

9- A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?!

Something I’ve always liked to be asked is what is my take on commercial and underground music, and honestly to me that doesn’t exists anymore, I’m not a fan of purism in the dance music community, I think music is not meant to be so gatekeeped or producing music has to have rules or regulations and way less if you’re an artist, and me being latino sometimes I find myself with people saying “You’re too commercial” or “You’re too underground” and to me nowadays with Tech House and all these records that we used to see them as underground being very mainstream I think that’s already been taken down and I believe it’s an amazing thing. It’s the way I model my career and being Latino if I want to headline an Ultra Mainstage or play in a Tulum festival and adapt my set to it while maintaining my essence I will.
