Erik Leuthäuser – „Schiff ohne Kapitän“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

There are a few Greek references lyrically on my new album „Sucht“ because my boyfriend is from Athens. So I am gonna go with a drink you can get anywhere in Greece but sadly almost nowhere else called Freddo Cappuccino! Refreshing, makes you awake and to me better than c0caine. Which brings us straight to the topic of the album: addiction!

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

My new single „Schiff ohne Kapitän“ is out right now with a video directed by @karlneubart. A second single will follow on February 2nd called „F_ck doch“ produced by @dexterfrancismason! Two more videos are gonna be released, too. The full album „Sucht“ will be out on @funinthechurch April 26th and here are the tour dates:

– 07.05. IG-Jazz Mannheim
– 16.05. A-Trane Berlin
– 21.05. Blue Note Dresden (Duo)
– 22.05. C-Keller Weimar (Duo)
– 24.05. KultRaum Kleinmachnow (Duo)
– 25.05. Saxstall Pohrsdorf
– 01.06. Donau115 Berlin
– 02.06. Trafo Jena

– 03.06. Schon Schön Mainz

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

There is a ridiculous conspiracy theory spread by right-wing lunatic Alex Jones saying government is using chemicals in order to turn people gay, using a mysterious „gay bomb“ devised by the Pentagon. Lol. While we see the dangerous effects of fake news and misinformation I do believe the world would be a better place if men in positions of power would be penetrated at least once in their life.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Think old school gay leather fashion Folsom style mixed with a splash of colour like an outfit Sufjan Stevens would wear on stage mixed with black sweatpants & white socks but make it a jumpsuit.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

Overall topic of the album is addiction! More specifically it is dedicated to all gay men who have or have had ch3ms3x.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

If s3x doesn’t count, I used to play Table tennis professionally.

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

– Grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday discovering my dad’s record collection. Because of that my dream was to become a jazz singer from early on

– Even though I do have a jazz backgound I listen to all types of music. My new album is inspired musically by people like Sufjan Stevens and singer @dexterfrancismason who also produced half of the album with me. Lyrically I am very inspired by my good friend & poet @niko_mit_c who also contributed to the album.

– Love performing live most of all! Especially solo with just me and my loopstations & electronics.

– As Nina Simone once said: How can you be an artist and not reflect the times. My music will always be influenced by what I find important as a person. Every artist who has the privilege of having somewhat of a platform has a responsibility. I take this very seriously and hope by me sharing and being vulnerable as an artist especially with topics surrounded by stigma people will get more understanding of how beautiful our differences are.

– Have released 5 albums already as a leader. Go check them out!

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

When I was like 4 or 5 years old my dad used to bring his guitar and we sang old German folk songs & Spirituals before I went to sleep. Plus I always sang along to the radio as a kid. Later I learned piano to be able to accompany myself. My dad also encouraged me to start writing my first own songs when I was like 14. Very thankful for a supportive family.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

If you would have to leave Germany and move to another country which one would it be? Either Greece cause my boyfriend is from Athens and we go there anyway all the time plus the weather is lovely and Freddo Cappuccino and cats… Or Nepal where I have many friends like the amazing singers @natashaoninsta and @mariafajardo. I teach Jazz Singing there sometimes at the best Jazz university I have seen @kathmandujazz
