Dressed Like Boys – „Nando“ + Exclusive Interview

Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to sip on while they listen to your new music?

I would recommend an Irish Coffee, but you can’t mix it. Just go through the layers. Cream first, then coffee, then whisky. That way, it sort of builds up like ‘Nando’: first it’s sweet, then it’s kinda bitter, and then the party starts.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I’ve been writing an album the past year and will gradually release songs within the next year. ‘Nando’ is the first one. I am Belgian, so I will mostly play in my home country the following months, although I have played some shows in The Netherlands and Germany already. I can’t wait to travel through Europe and play in every corner of our beautiful continent.

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example, Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

There’s this theory that Harry Styles and Louis Tomlison from One Direction are in a committed relationship, but are being closeted by their management. I’d like that one to be true. Break free, Harry and Louis!

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I buy most of my clothes second hand. That’s not really a style or a particular brand, but it does say something about my music. I am influenced by artists from the seventies (David Bowie, Elton John, …) so in a way, my music’s second hand too. And just like with second hand clothing, it’s all about finding new combinations with old stuff that’s been lying around.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

My songs are almost always deeply personal. They’re about my childhood, my sexuality, being gay in today’s society, stuff like that. I’m alway trying to figure out who I am through music.

‘Nando’ is about my boyfriend (called Nand). We were fighting in the middle of the dancefloor of a nightclub once. I remember us standing there, not wanting to look each other in the eye. Flashing lights everywhere, dancing people surrounding us. Everyone was wild and careless, and we were hurting. We ‘d both said some things, not because we meant them, but because we knew they would hurt the other. That happens sometimes. You love someone so much you end up hurting him. The song’s about those moments in a relationship, the wounds and regrets we suffer for the sake of love.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I LOVE Italian cuisine, you know, la cucina povera as they call it. You should try my lasagne. Not to brag, but people fight over it.

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

– I grew up with Nirvana, so I spent years making rock music.

– The piano was my first instrument. My teacher told me I was born to play Bach.

– I think Tolstoj is the greatest writer of all time.

– I write music in my head. I just sit on a chair, or lie down or go walking, and I play a song in my head that doesn’t exist yet. And then I play it over and over and it changes every time and I don’t start recording until the song is perfect in my head.

– I love singing, and I especially love doing backing vocals. The choir you hear at the end of ‘Nando’, that’s all me.

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

As a kid, I used to rent cd’s at the local library and listen to them on my small stereo. I would write down the lyrics and sing along and sit at the piano for hours, trying to figure out the chords. It was a slow process, and I probably learned a lot of things the wrong way. But I guess it also made me find my own style of playing and singing.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Question: “Do you like Lana Del Rey, and what’s your favourite song of hers?”

Answer: “I LOVE Lana! My favourite would be ‘Hope Is A Dangerous Thing For A Woman Like Me To Have (But I Have It). But ask me again tomorrow. Thank you so much for asking!”
