DOTE – „dreams“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

The lyrics of our new single „dreams“ oscillate between the real and the dream world. We wanted to create a song which feels like the state in-between being awake or being asleep, a tune that sort of somnambulates. So we’d recommend peppermint tea while listening to it. It’s our go-to-drink before going to sleep and also it gives you perfect comfort for snoozing in bed.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

So we just put out „dreams“ and a music video to it. It’s the second single of our first album „feelings“. The record will be released on May 19th and we’re already quite nervous about how people will react to our full length debut. We never wanted to do an album as a band, because it feels like settling to a sound. Making an album is like saying: That’s it, that’s how we see our selves as musicians. The journey to find a proper sound which fits this statement was tough but now we did it. And we couldn’t be happier. The 11 songs on „feelings“ are the best one’s we’ve ever written. Can’t wait to play them live on our Germany tour in the end of May.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as a band?!

1.) We have two lead singers who actually share the vocal parts;

2.) We wear vintage suits which make us look like an 80s high school prom band;

3.) We met each other in our school’s choir;

4.) We all just were part of that choir because of the promised trip, not because of the singing;

5.) Nobody in our band likes mangos. That’s funny because one of our song’s called „Mango“.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Because we were these vintage suits all the time we bought at a thrift shop and our music is a combination of 80s influences and contemporary indie music: Probably vintage clothes in pastel shades. Or a nice worn out leather jacket combined with a loose fit Levi’s jeans.

We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

We’re all Millennials which means we all grew up reading the Harry Potter books. And we’re all big fans until today. So probably there still a faint hope in every one of us, that somewhere out there some people do real magic.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

There are some small artists who act like streaming platforms are the worst thing that’s ever happened to the music industry. That’s unfair in our opinion. Spotify and co give you huge opportunities when it comes to reach audiences in different cities, countries, it’s a whole new world of promoting your music. But still the payment model isn’t working out really well for smaller artists. Because every stream is payed with the same amount of money it benefits the big players. Would be great if they changed their model to a system which is more artist-focused. For example: The monthly fee one subscriber pays to Spotify is divided between the artists they actually listened to.

Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

So the album’s called „feelings“ cause while writing the record we were scanning our old teenage memories like trawling through a library trying to find the important moments which shaped our characters. And we truly believe all these little situations influenced our music and our selves more than anything else. But each song is a different facet of adolescence. The first single „boy“ for example tells the story about a friend who struggles with mental health issues and the inability to help them. The second single „dreams“ deals with the feeling of loss of identity after a break up. But there are not just such dark topics on the record. The next single will be an uplifting one. Promise!

A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

What are the three best pop songs of all time?

Unarguably: 1.) Beach Boys – God Only Knows; 2.) David Bowie – Let’s Dance; 3.) Vanessa Carlton – A Thousand Miles. The piano line on the last one is just pure pop music perfection.
