DADDY SQUAD – “My Magic Number” ft. Dita Von Teese + Exclusive Interview

1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

Hi. I’m Daddy Squad, also known as Andrew Armstrong. I’m a producer and DJ, and record label owner. My music is kind of italo-disco/ nu disco.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

launched this project with a collaboration with Violet Chachki. Now this one is with Dita Von Teese, and it’s called My Magic Number. I’ve collaborated with Dita a lot over the years, so it’s great to work together again.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

1. I’m firmly going for LGBT+ collaborators and icons for this project. My last project was a little stifled, because other people wanted to bland us out. I felt it lacked personality, which I’m making up for with Daddy Squad. It’s all about the personality.

2. I’ve had a long history in music, collaborating with Charli XCX, Sia, writing for Blondie, remixing Kylie, Kelis, Lady Gaga and more, and I’m bringing together my past in music with this new project, slapping a moustache on it, and sprinkling it in disco dust.

3. I produce all my own music, and normally I’m heavily involved in the writing process of the lyrics and vocal melody as well.

4. I’m 100% independent, so I’m also accountant, lawyer, art director, co-ordinator and coffee boy.

5. I love retro equipment and sounds, so I use a lot of analogue equipment in my productions. My Roland Jupiter 6 is my favourite.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I love a brand in Madrid called Ana Locking. She’s amazing because she designs glam stuff for men, where most brands are quite bland. I really like all the Gucci stuff at the moment as well. Anything that is throwing back to 80’s retro, as well as looking forward works for me!

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

I am bringing positivity to the table with Daddy Squad. I’m really about music healing the world, so you will never see negativity in a Daddy Squad song. I’m not about tearing people down, I want to build them up.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I meditate every day. Gym three times a week. Cook a decent risotto. Call my mum every day, since she lives alone. Normal gay stuff I guess! (Except the meditation bit)

7. Being on stage feels like….!

It’s great, I do love it. I love sharing my love of music with other people, and watching them enjoy it. I always try and stick to the two e’s of DJ-ing. Educate, and entertain. There’s no point playing really obscure stuff that no one understands. Nor is there any point in only playing the hits. It has to be a balance.

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I was classically trained in piano, but I taught myself everything in production. Collaborating, or watching youtube videos mainly!

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

What’s the secret to a long creative career?

Also was keep an open mind, and NEVER say you’ve mastered something. Approach every song like it’s the first one you’ve ever written. Stay curious. And look at music in wonder. Then you’ll never suffer writers’ block. Joyful curiosity is the way forward.
