BILBAO & THALA – „Slow It Down“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

R: Hello everybody, we are Robin and Léon. We are half of the German indie-pop quartet BILBAO!

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

R: Last Friday was the release date of our new single, it is called „Slow It Down“ and it is out now! So please go listen to it and watch it! We did this song with Thala, who is a fantastic indie-pop singer from Berlin. It’s the one ballad on our album, so don’t be surprised if it does not fit the entire scheme of things but it is a very, very beautiful song.

L: Yes, it brings you down, it calms you down. I think it’s the perfect song to start the weekend, just having a deep breath and relaxing in there.

R: Furthermore, on June 24 our album „Shake Well“ will be released. So go follow us on Instagram, so you won’t miss out!

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as a band?!

L: We’re all from Hamburg!

R: We’re energetic. And summer-y! Aaaaand …

L: … we love live music!

R: (nods) that’s right. Okay.

L: And we’re fun! Most times.
R: FUN. (cue Kazoo Kid clip)

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your band?

R: We’re not very much into brands.

L: (shaking head) No, I just wear whatever is comfortable and what’s laying around.

R: If we had to choose, I would describe our style as „thrift store“. Because it’s sustainable! And we’re poor! … yet! (laughs)

5. What’s your songwriting process?

L: Most times, Jannes (our bassist and producer) comes up with a rough idea and then we start developing it.

R: Then we sit together and write the lyrics together.

L: You gotta get a vibe going! That’s important.

R: Yes. It is a very, very slow process and sometimes there are up to 70 versions of the same song, until it is finished. Just take a listen to our album when it comes out and you will know WHY!

6. If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

R: That the importance of social media has skyrocketed over the last years. Social media is not a bad thing in itself, but the way it has become SO important, that sometimes being in an indie-band feels more like running a production company for content. If I could change that, I would.

L: Having more time for actually making music!! We are so stoked to go out and play our songs live.

R: We became musicians to play music and not to fumble with our phones all day after all …

L: … so please, come to our concerts!

7. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

L: You really have to listen to our album (giggles) to get all the lyrics and the feel of the songs. But most topics are about getting out of the usual things that you do and going out there to just experience new stuff. I think it’s an inspiring and motivating album.

R: We cover a whole bunch of topics. One of them is what you said, about leaving your comfort zone or getting out of the rut, if you will. But we also have song about climate change, or a song about dancing in the club. Whatever comes to mind, basically. Our lyrics mostly have a second layer,

we sometimes sing about fun topics, but mean other, probably deeper things.

L: You’ll have to listen more closely, to get underneath.

R: So listen to the songs more often, so you can discover all the meaning behind the words!

8. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

R: What’s your favorite … fruit?

L: Banana! (waits, then bursts out laughing)

R: (mischievous) Don’t we all love the banana? Twisted Maaaaaleeee? I don’t even know what my favorite fruit is. Possibly also banana. How boring.

L: How do you open a pomegranate? That would be a nice question actually, I have an answer for that.

R: (bursts out laughing) OKAY LEON, the question we have never been asked before but REALLY want to answer is: „How do you open a pomegranate?“

L: So, it’s easy. The trick is, you have to get a cup of water (makes great gestures with his hands, indicating a much bigger vessel than a cup)

R: … you get a bowl.

L: Yeah. You have to do it underwater. … okay, that just…

R: (laughing hysterically) WOW, underwhelming answer, but here you are! Open your pomegranate under water so it’s not messy.

L: So it doesn’t squirt out all the juices!

R: And you end up looking like someone out of a horror film! ———

R: That’s it, for now! Go listen to our new song „Slow It Down“, visit us on our instagram and TikTok and come to our live shows! Thank you for having us!

L: And get our album, June 24!

R: Bye bye Twisted Male! (waving goodbye)
