Jeangu Macrooy – „Independent Girls & Nasty Evil Gays“ + Exclusive Interview

Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to sip on while they listen to your new music?

I don’t drink alcohol, but if this album were a drink, it would definitely be a wine. The type depends on the song, though—some are deep reds, others more like a crisp rosé. Honestly, I might just have to curate a whole wine pairing menu to match the moods of the album.

Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

My fourth studio album drops this fall and I’m beyond excited. I spent two summers working on it, during a time of huge personal change—like the end of an eight-year relationship. I also turned 30 (and then 31), which naturally brought a lot of reflection. I’ll be doing a theater tour through the Netherlands this fall with my band, and there are still a couple of singles coming before the album drops. Lots to look forward to!

We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true?

I think I’d go with one of those “they faked their death to escape fame” theories. Like, if Whitney or Amy Winehouse were actually alive, hiding away somewhere peaceful after all the pain they went through in the public eye—that would make me really happy. They deserved so much better.

Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

This album is about life after coming of age. I’m still young, but I’m no longer as naïve as I used to be—and being a grown-up hasn’t exactly delivered all the answers. The songs explore escapism, happiness, joy, delusion, growing pains, loneliness, and the hunger for connection. The album is called Young, Awkward & Lonely, which pretty much sums up the themes in three words.

Besides music, do you have any special talents?

I draw and paint—although I haven’t done it in a while. Three of my previous album covers are actually self-portraits. Not this next one, though.

Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

I’m a lyrics-first person. A song’s power lies in its storytelling. That doesn’t mean it always has to be poetic, but I believe language is such a beautiful tool—and often underrated in pop.

I see all art forms as connected, and I live for their fusion.

Pop is my favorite genre. Even when I’m telling a deeper story, I find pop to be the perfect vehicle—it’s innovative and reflects the now.

I’d rather sound raw and real than polished and lip-synced.

I truly believe that if anything can save us—save the world—it’s the arts. Nothing else speaks to the soul so universally or brings people together the way music, theater, and visual art can.

The road so far… who or what was your biggest support?

I’ve been lucky to have a lot of support along the way—from my family, my friends, and the people I’ve worked with. Especially Perquisite, who’s been a creative collaborator for years and now manages me as well. His belief in me has meant the world.
