The games of visionary video game developer Hideo Kojima are among the most eagerly anticipated new releases in both gaming and cultural circles. With game characters portrayed by world-class actors such as Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux, Kojima’s creative work pushes the narrative and experimental boundaries of gaming. In collaboration with the storytelling pioneer, Hamilton created an in-game clock for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the sequel to the award-winning, genre-bending masterpiece Death Stranding.
Hamilton worked closely with renowned art director Yoji Shinkawa to create this futuristic, Boulton-inspired limited edition that perfectly captures the techno-apocalyptic landscape of DEATH STRANDING. As with many of Kojima’s past works, Shinkawa assumed art direction for this series, translating Kojima’s mental imagination into a physical clock.
The design elements borrowed from the Boulton are reflected in the sleek, curved lines of the black PVD-coated titanium case. Titanium combines durability with a robust yet stylish look, reduces case weight by 45 percent, and is highly resistant to saltwater corrosion. The watch consists of seven sapphire crystal elements: a main viewing window framed by two lines, each of which is divided into three sections adapted to the shape of the case. The unique, completely new case shape creates a dynamic, ever-changing play of light and shadow. Minimalist gray markers on the dial contrast with the lacquered orange second hand and the orange index at 12 o’clock. Loop-shaped hour and minute hands echo the design of the sapphire crystal and brighten the dial. The black PVD-coated bracelet underscores the watch’s sleek yet durable, technical design.
The three-hand automatic movement with 25 jewels has an 80-hour power reserve. True to the watch’s apocalyptic narrative origins, a Nivachron™ balance spring provides enhanced resistance to magnetic fields, temperature fluctuations, and shocks.
Given Hamilton’s long-standing, celebrated presence in the world of film, collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS was an ideal match given the video game studio’s cinematic auteur approach. Hamilton’s work with the creators of Dune: Part Two, Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune, and Interstellar alerted the studio to the brand and the potential for a horological collaboration.
Limited to just 2,000 pieces, the watch is individually numbered on the case back and comes in a collector’s box inspired by story elements from the game, along with a specially crafted cleaning cloth for the collaboration.
