Wear It Before You Buy It: How to Test a New Fragrance This Season

Autumn is when the heavier fragrances come back out: woods, leather, amber, tobacco. It is also when the new launches pile up, and when a full bottle bought on the strength of one spray on a paper strip can turn into an expensive mistake. A perfume changes over a day. The bright opening you smell in the shop fades within the first hour, and what is left on your own skin hours later is what other people actually notice.

A few rules make testing worth the effort.

Test on skin, not paper. Spray once on the inside of the wrist or the forearm and leave it alone. Rubbing the wrists together flattens the top notes.

Give it a full day. Smell it in the morning, after lunch and in the evening. Note how close it sits to the skin and when it fades.

Wear it in real life. A scent that works in a quiet office can feel heavy in a warm bar or on a long train ride. Two or three different days tell you more than an afternoon of sniffing in a department store.

Compare two at most. After the third fragrance the nose gets tired, and everything starts to smell alike.

The easiest way to do this properly is with a decant: a small amount of the real fragrance, poured from the original bottle into a travel vial. Paris-based Scento hand-pours authentic designer and niche perfumes from original full-size bottles, sourced through authorised European retailers, into 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml glass vials, and offers a 30 ml bottle decant on most perfumes. A small vial lets you wear a scent over several days; a larger one can come with you on a trip.

If the decant convinces you, the full bottle is the next step. Scento also sells the full bottle of selected perfumes, and on the perfumes it sells as a full bottle, the price of the sample counts toward the full bottle of the same perfume if you buy it within 30 days: contact the Scento team when you order the bottle and they take the sample price off. Scento delivers with tracking to 26 European countries.

A full bottle lasts a year or more. A few days with a decant is the surest way to know you will still like it in month eight.
