1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to sip on while they listen to your new music?
I’m gonna give you one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic drink to fully enjoy Clown Syndrome.
For my party animals and buzzed payaso friends, I’d recommend one of my favorite drinks ever: a tequila soda with tequila, carbonated mineral water, lime, and a salt. Since this album takes you on a journey from beginning to end, I feel like this drink matches those highs and lows perfectly.
For my sober friends and responsible clownettes, I’d recommend a virgin michelada made with Clamato, sparkling water, Tajín, Maggi sauce, and lime. A tasty drink with tasty jams is always a good combination.
2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!
We just wrapped up the Clown Syndrome Tour, and the album has been out for less than a month. It’s already one of my favorite things I’ve ever created.
We toured from Austin to Atlanta, New York, California, and a bunch of other cities. One of the coolest parts was seeing how many fans already knew every lyric. Watching people sing these songs back to us meant everything. I’ve also noticed the music videos continuing to grow, which is such an awesome feeling.
I definitely have more songs to release from the demos I made during this era, but for now I’m taking a little break after tour before jumping into the next chapter.
3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which harmless theory would you wish were true?
One of my favorite conspiracy theories is the Mandela Effect. I really do feel like some things used to be one way, and then one day you look back and they’re completely different.
For example, I could’ve sworn Pikachu’s tail had a black tip when I was growing up, but apparently it never did. Stuff like that always blows my mind.
Honestly, I’d love it if one day people started having Mandela Effect moments about Tony Jupiter—like remembering a lyric differently, thinking one of my music videos had a different ending, or remembering something about me that never actually happened. I guess we’ll see if that ever happens.
4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?
Dickies.
They’re strong, durable, timeless, and somehow they always look good no matter what you’re doing. They’re made to last, they’re adaptable, and they’re hard to tear apart. I’d like to think my music is the same way.
5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?
A song I’d really like to talk about is “Sexual Guidance.” I think some people hear it and assume it’s about cheating, but it’s actually the opposite.
The song is about using temporary distractions to avoid dealing with your real problems. Whether it’s meaningless relationships, alcohol, drugs, or anything else, it’s about trying to numb yourself instead of facing what’s really hurting you.
Ironically, another song on the album, “Never Leave,” actually is about cheating… no pun intended.
6. Besides music, do you have any special talents?
I love drawing. I’d call myself more of an anti-artist because I enjoy making weird cartoons and imperfect art. I actually drew the Clown Syndrome album cover myself, inspired by Precious Moments artwork.
I also love collecting and DJing vinyl records, and I really enjoy writing short horror stories whenever I get the chance.
7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist!
- I’ll never be mean to a fan. I don’t judge people, and I try to treat everyone with respect. Unless you’re mean first… then we probably won’t get along.
- I’m very proud of my background. I’m Chicano—just very light-skinned—and my heritage means a lot to me.
- Writing and performing music is my calling. I genuinely don’t think I was put on this earth to do anything else.
- I’m absolutely terrible at math.
- I love trying new food everywhere I travel. If you ever meet me, give me a recommendation because I’m always looking for my next favorite meal. I’m honestly not picky at all.
8. The road so far… who or what has been your biggest support?
There are a lot of people I’d like to thank, but especially my wife, my parents, my manager, and my bandmates.
They’ve always kept it real with me and supported me emotionally and physically through everything. I try to do the same for them. I honestly wouldn’t be here without that support system.
9. A question you’d like to answer, but have never been asked in an interview before?
Who would you love to collaborate with?
I’d love to work with Mac DeMarco, Cuco, or Cypress Hill.
Mac DeMarco has always inspired me because his music feels effortless, honest, and timeless. Cuco represents a generation of Chicano artists who aren’t afraid to be emotional or experimental, and I think our sounds could create something really unique together. Cypress Hill would be a dream because they helped shape Chicano representation in alternative music, and collaborating with legends like them would be an incredible full-circle moment.
