Raphaela – „Be My Hero“ + Exclusive Interview

Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

You can never go wrong with a Prosecco! Perfect to sip on while discovering new music.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I just put out a single called “Be My Hero” and a Lyric Video to go along with it on my YouTube channel. I have another one in the works that I am super excited about and I will be opening for Nigerian songer-songwriter Ruger in Ottawa on Friday, October 18 2024 at the Palace.

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

For an artist, I think one fun one would be the one where Elvis Presley faked his death and is living a quiet life somewhere and potentially still performing in remotes areas. Imagine if this were true! I would love to go catch one of his shows and learn about the music industry from the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself! I bet he’d have a lot to say on why it would have contributed to his disappearance.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

This is one that is still evolving as I write and release more music, but to date,  my fashion style is best described as romantic, dreamy, and timeless.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

My songs are all about empowering, inspiring, giving hope and making my listeners daydream. As a music consumer myself, I oftentimes search for that one melodic line or lyric that will help uplift my mood and make me go back to that song over and over again. Recently, I’ve been navigating towards writing songs related to identity and learning to realize our self-worth and claiming back our power as we grow up. My recent release « Be My Hero » is about finding that power within you that you’ve neglected for so long and becoming the hero of you life.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

This is probably more of an acquired skill, but besides music, my childhood sport was horse back riding. I haven’t done it in a while but it will always be that one safe space that I can go to besides music that can me forget about life challenges. Besides that, I have a degree in journalism and communications, so you can say that I love writing in all its forms, not just songwriting!

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

I can play the piano and the guitar

I am perfectly trilingual and can sing in English, French, and Arabic

I am as passionate about songwriting as I am about being artist and performing. I have something to say, and songwriting allows me put that out into the world and hope it will help other people who might listen to the song and feel like they can relate.

My musical genre is pop but my lyrical style is rooted in the storytelling aspects of country music.

When i’m not singing or writing my own songs, my favorite songs to practice and belt out to are « Je t’aime » , « Je suis malade », and « Adagio » by Lara Fabian.

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

My mom is an opera singer so I don’t remember a time when music wasn’t a part of my life. I started piano and choir lessons around 7 years old. This progressed to guitar and songwriting when I was 13 and discovered Taylor Swift who was doing it all on her own. I spent a summer teaching myself guitar and songwriting and it was absolutely amazing to realize I could express my feeling through songwriting!  I recorded an EP at 14 years old but never did anything with it at the time since being independent and self marketing wasn’t a thing yet and I had no idea where to start!

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

A question i’ve never been asked before would be: What’s the most meaningful compliment you’ve ever received about your music, and why did it resonate with you?

My answer would be: The best compliment to date i’ve received about my music came from someone who told me they were a kidney transplant patient and that my song « Be My Hero » became their anthem for not backing down, fighting and being a warrior. It was one of those cathartic and rewarding moments that make all the hard moments as an indie artist worth it. This was all I wanted for this song, for it to help someone out there who needs a bit of encouragement to find and trust their own power. I hope I get to keep on doing that for a long time.
