Mixed Signals – “Ghosts” + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to sip on while they listen to your new music?

„Ghosts“ is a song built around themes of nostalgia and reflection. It talks about growing out of your hometown, moving on, and looking back on the places and experiences that shaped you. For me, one of those memories is finally being old enough to go to my local pub when I turned 18. I’d always start my night with a few pints of Tennent’s Lager. I suppose anything that takes you back to where you grew up or reminds you of your past can spark that feeling of nostalgia.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

This year has been non stop, to be honest. We’ve already recorded five tracks for an upcoming EP and have spent a lot of time travelling between Ayr, Aberdeen and Liverpool to get everything finished. Alongside that, we played a packed headline show at King Tut’s in February, which was a huge moment for us. We also had the chance to support The Cases in Edinburgh in April, which was a brilliant gig.

Looking ahead, we’ve got another headline show in Glasgow on 21st June, and I’m already back writing material for the band’s follow up EP. It’s been an exciting year so far, and there’s plenty more to come.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as a band?!

We were never supposed to be a band. We originally got together for a one off charity gig in my hometown. The show went much better than we expected, and before long songs, opportunities and gig offers started appearing. Eventually we decided to give ourselves a name and take things seriously.

We’ve only been together for two years. It feels like I’ve known the guys forever because we’ve been through so much together in such a short space of time. The funny thing is, we didn’t actually know each other that well before the band. I think my first proper conversation with Leon was in a pub when I asked him if he could play bass guitar.

We’ve just released our latest single. „Ghosts“ was released on 29th May, and we’re incredibly proud of it. We’d love everyone to give it a listen.

We all listen to very different music. Unlike a lot of bands, we don’t all share the same musical tastes. There are a handful of artists we all enjoy, but not many. I think that’s one of our strengths because everyone brings different influences and perspectives into the songwriting and recording process.

You can find us everywhere online. We’re active across most social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Spotify, so make sure to check us out and keep up with what we’re doing.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I can’t speak for everyone who listens to us, but as a band we all love Doc Martens, Levi’s and Adidas Originals. If you ever bump into any of us, chances are we’ll be wearing at least one of those brands. They’ve always been part of our style and feel like a good reflection of who we are.

5. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

I’m not massively into conspiracy theories, but one that’s always fascinated me is the theory that Paul McCartney died during The Beatles‘ career and was replaced by a lookalike. I don’t personally believe it, but it’s amazing how many people have spent years finding supposed clues, whether it’s album artwork like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road, or hidden messages in songs played backwards. It’s one of those theories that never seems to go away.

6. If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

There’s not much I can personally do to change the industry, but one thing that frustrates me is how dependent it has become on social media. There are so many talented bands who get overlooked because they aren’t focusing enough on their online presence. I understand how important social media is for growth and exposure, but sometimes it feels like it becomes more important than the music itself. That’s just the reality of the industry now, and every band has to learn how to use it as a tool.

7. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

We don’t usually set out to write about specific themes, but topics like love, relationships and nostalgia always seem to find their way into our songs. Not in a clichéd or overly sentimental way, but because they’re things everyone experiences. We’ve all met good people and bad people, and we’ve all seen different sides of relationships. They’re universal experiences that people can relate to, even when they’re difficult to talk about. Sometimes hearing those feelings expressed in a song can help people connect with them.

8. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

No one has ever actually asked me that before. The song that means the most to me personally is Destination Unknown, but my favourite song to write and record was I’ll Show You. Having said that, every time we play Satisfied? live, the reaction is incredible. It always goes down a treat with the crowd.
