Bossa Nova emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s, driven by musicians, singers, composers and poets who sought to rejuvenate Brazilian music and culture. The story of bossa nova unfolds in Beco das Garrafas, a small street in Copacabana where young cariocas gathered until dawn to celebrate the new sounds. It was a fusion of underlying samba, traditional Brazilian rhythms, American jazz and innovative Portuguese lyrics.
João Gilberto’s warm and simple vocal style, his syncopated guitar picking and Tom Jobim’s sophisticated harmonies and minimalist arrangements distinguished the bossa nova from the traditional samba cançoes.
