Editorial: The fine Art of Male Photography by Stephen Wallace

My name is Stephen Wallace, and I do well…photography.

When I was very young, I wanted nothing more in life than to be one of the X-Men. That’s all I wanted. (And a kick ass superpower to go along with it, not one of the useless „powers“ some of the gang wield. *cough* no names). I needed to be different.

I remember finding my grandfather’s old polaroid camera, and having no idea what it even was or what it did. As a curious child does, I pressed buttons. The flash goes off, and I thought I broke it. But then, out comes a white square. I was presented with…a gift? As it slowly developed into a terrible selfie of me, I realized „Holy shit. I can freeze time!“

My superpower had finally come. (Delusional, party of one, I know.)

Fast forward to adulthood, and im still playing with cameras. I do portraits because I think it’s powerful. That specific person, in that moment, will never look the same as they did in my photo ever again. I blend 4 pillars into my work that I coin as „Moody. Bitchy. Sexy. Cinematic.“ This is how I view the world.

A majority of my models are first timer men, with confidence issues. But my superpower has evolved into showing people themselves – how I SEE them, not how they see them. Breaking the boundary of erotic with artistic is my specialty, and why not?

I need to be different‘, and I feel that is what I have achieved in my work.
