Smashby – “First Rodeo” + Exclusive Interview

1. Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend listeners sip on while they listen to “First Rodeo“?

Omg what a fab question! I’d say a tequila sunrise, it’s fun with a real kick just like all good country pop songs.

2. Please tell us about “First Rodeo” and give us an update on your upcoming album, tour dates, new videos…

First Rodeo is my new single, it’s super fun and flirty, it’s like a complete jukebox in one song. There’s like a country vibe to it but it’s very pop and even has a little club beat in the bridge.  It kinda captures all the sounds I’ve dabbled with. I wrote it with Velvet Code and Emmie Jay at So Fierce Music and it’s all about having that one person you can go back to have a good time with.  It might not be going anywhere but as long as you’re having fun, there’s no harm done.

I’m working on A LOT of music right now, so we’re unsure if we’re gonna drop an EP or an album. I’ve got enough material for an album and it’d be my debut album so it’s definitely an exciting thought. All the tracks feel like my best work so far and it just keeps getting better and better.

I’ll be heading out on my Pride Tour around the UK in May. I’m super excited. I would love to do it world wide one day.

3. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which harmless theory do you wish were true? (For example: dinosaurs living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

I don’t really get into conspiracy theories.  They freak me out!  (Laughing)  I guess E.T living in California would be slay. Oh wait! I have one: Larry! Like Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.  If you know, you know and I’d like that to be true.  I think it’d be really sweet.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music and why?

Right now I’m all about the cowgirl looks! The hats, the flares, the sparkly boots. I’ve been working on some country pop tracks, so the fashion and the music go hand in hand and I love a fun, camp fit.

5. Tell us more about your music and the topics and messages you’re most interested in covering through song?

My music right now is more personal than it’s ever been. I’m writing about boys I’ve been in love with – one sidedly – and all that comes with that. The excitement of a crush and also the harsh reality of getting over someone you never got to be with. My music used to be more kind of conceptual, or just based off a fun title.  It was rarely about my actual life but it’s become so therapeutic. As for the sound, maybe it’s best we don’t go there. I’ve rubbed a lot of people the wrong way saying I’m doing country pop. It’s still pop however they feel I’m taking away from the classic country stars which is not my intention. So I’m just trying not to label it now. It’s all kinds of sounds and vibes and it’s 100% me.

6. Other than music, what special talent do you have?

I’m not sure if I’d call it talent but I’ve always danced and I think I’m pretty good at it. I’m a bit of a Disney geek. I could probably recite all of The Little Mermaid if I tried. And I do a fab impression of Stitch from Lilo & Stitch.

7. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist:

I write all my songs. If I don’t write it, I can’t relate to it. I’m unwilling to compromise my femininity in order to be successful. My goal is to spread queer joy with my music. I wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for Britney Spears – she’s my biggest inspiration.    I’m very hard working and I won’t stop until every single person knows my name.

8. The road so far…. who or what has been your biggest support?

My grandparents – no doubt about it. They’ve driven me all over the country to get to any opportunity I could. My goal is to one day buy them a house to say thank you.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before…  + Answer pls

My dream movie role? To be The Little Merboy.  It’s not a thing yet, but I’d love it to be. To retell the story the way Hans Christian Andersen originally thought of it, being in love with a straight friend he could never be with, which he related to being from another world like a Mermaid. I think it’d be beautiful to retell the story with the original heartbreaking queer storyline that was never told.
