Real Sickies – “Triage” + Exclusive Interview

1. Thank you very much for your time! Before we introduce your new release to our readers – what kind of drink would you recommend to zip on while they listen to your new music?

Off to a great start! I can tell this is going to be a fun interview:)

Personally I love a non alch lager or Pilsner, preferably cool.  Not too cold that you can’t chug it back and it turns to ice when you open it. That happens pretty often in this winter land we sickies live in.

I also really enjoy a nice smooth sarsaparilla or a root beer . Something with fizz that makes you wanna dance.

Each to their own though, I think whatever is going to allow you to sink into the music.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

We released Triage the other week, that one was really fun. I had all these models in my garage for months on end stuffed full of matches and fireworks.. so it was a relief to get that fire hazard away from my residence lol.

We will also have two other music videos coming out soon, one for “Should have Seen it coming” – a song about trusting your gut instinct but choosing to ignore it in hopes of a positive change.

Next up will be – Wild Imagination-  lyrically it’s a very dirty sounding song, as it should be.. it’s about becoming infatuated with collecting fossils. Petrified wood mostly. It also explores some new sounds for the band. Joshua Wells really helped us capture the flavours we wanted.

THEN!! The album!! UNDER A PLASTIC BAG.

We recorded the album in eight long days. There was a small bubble in our world at the time. Everything else was outside of us and we just focused on the task ahead. It felt like a dream. This will be our fifth LP so we stepped out of our wheelhouse a little.

We hope to get back out to Europe again soon but for now we will be focusing on a few Canadian tours and looking to expand our reaches elsewhere.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as a band?!

  1. We started as just a wedding band, one show was the plan I believe.

  2. We come from Edmonton Alberta Canada.

  3. Our live shows are professional chaos

  4. We have our own “Real sickies- cool club” stamp that we use to mark official one off collectors items

  5. We stand for equality

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

It’s punk when it comes down to it. We have a lot of ear worms which gets us into the Pop punk genre, but I think it’s Punk pop overall.

We love a lot of the first wave of punk and power pop bands. Buzzcocks, Phil Seymour, Teenage Head, Stripes, nikki corvette, The Boys , The Fans etc.

If it’s pop punk then it’s with a 77 snot driven lense.

5. We live in times of many conspiracy theories. Which, harmless, theory would you wish were true? (For example Dinos living inside Earth or E.T. living in a home in California)

That peace will come to earth. That and Bigfoot is real.

6. If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

We acknowledge the part we play in the male dominated side of the industry given that most of the members in the band identify as male. But For the record  Definitely not all  straight..

We recognize the struggle that has persisted in the industry and we hope to see the continued growth of gender equality.

7. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

Oh geez, let’s pull a few out of the hat here..

PAULIE! This one we got asked to write a song for a compilation, the original demo was fairly short. We really explored this song in the studio. It was great to have some pals from Boot Licker, victimas club and the proclaimers join in on the gang vocals. Technology..

Paralyzed-  is loosely about trying to get paid from shows. It’s also about the choice to not make make action after someone says they will deliver. I remember one of my old bands getting in a brawl on stage with some idiots in the crowd.. something that really stood out was hearing the promoter say his hands are tied.

A common thread I noticed was a few uses of the words lips” which can be interpreted in many ways..

We touch are fair but about global warming and “natural disasters “ and the parts we play in that.

It’s a lot of recognition of one’s flaws and navigating relationships surrounding addiction and loss, it’s also about acceptance and the will to move forward.

Each song does somehow tie into one another but each one has its own meaning or many meanings.

For the record though, Wild Imagination is purely about being a rock hound. So we dedicate that to all you wanna be geologists out there.

It’s catchy songs with a darkish message and a slight glimmer of hope. The usual sickies nature. Just a little different

8.  A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

There’s been a lot of interviews in the past of fairly cookie cutter questions.. after finishing the interview I thought why didn’t they ask anything but that..

I gotta say that the questions you’ve asked are some of the top tier questions and I genuinely appreciate them. Which makes this question very difficult to answer.

Thanks for taking the time to ask these, I apologize for the delay in answering. We just got our records in and I needed a bit of time to appreciate the art before getting lost outside of it.
