Since 2020, MIDO has been honoring one of the oldest Mexican celebrations and this year presents the “Circulo de Luz”, a spectacular limited edition Commander dedicated to Día de Muertos. In a colorful fireworks display, its dial celebrates the emblematic skull against a poignant background inspired by the Aztec Sunstone, one of the most famous Mexican sculptures. Thanks to a mechanism specially adapted to this model, the shades change from day to day: strong, surprising and even phosphorescent in the dark.
Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow, White, Pink, Orange! The festive commander “Circulo de Luz” surprises every day with changing colors on her deep black face. Limited to 777 pieces in an exclusive watch box, the edition honors Día de Muertos and confirms MIDO’s creative courage and watchmaking skills. The “Mexican Day of the Dead”, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, arose from the mixing of Catholic and indigenous traditions and is characterized by its cheerfulness. Inspired by its close connection with Mexico – this is the fifth limited edition created for the occasion – MIDO gives the Commander, the brand’s timeless icon since 1959, a new and breathtaking look. The design of the dial features the skull, the symbolic figure of the event, surrounded by the motif of the Aztec sunstone, as seen on the Mexican one peso coins. The mechanism, specially adapted for this limited edition, which is usually at the heart of the brand’s BIG DATE models, allows new shades to appear every day through several openings on the dial. At night, the design is brought to life by Super-LumiNova® in eight shades with a spectacular, multi-colored glow. The case and bracelet made of satin steel with black PVD coating create an intense contrast. At the heart of this original and explosive Commander “Circulo de Luz” is a mechanism of impressive reliability. The latest generation of Swiss automatic caliber, Caliber 80, challenges time – just like the tradition of Día de Muertos.
A dance of colors
The black dial of the Commander “Circulo de Luz” Limited Edition is the canvas for a colorful festival. The motif of the Aztec sunstone and the skull are drawn on it in several colors. Thanks to several openings, the colors also change every day – at 6 o’clock for the teeth of the „skull“ as well as all around. To display the different colors, the BIG DATE disk – normally used to display the date in a window – has been cleverly designed to be multi-colored. Stick hands with white Super-Luminova®, indices in strong colors – also with a dot of luminous material at the ends – and a slim, white traced minute division ensure perfect legibility of the time. At night, this fascinating face comes to life: eight luminous nuances animate the skull and the surrounding motif of the famous Aztec stone. A curved and faceted sapphire crystal protects this unique work of art. To emphasize the striking tones of the dial, MIDO combines them with a stainless steel case and bracelet that are completely black PVD coated. The satin-finished surfaces create a matt effect, which is emphasized by the curve of the Commander’s characteristic bezel, which is polished for even more shine.
An impressive mechanical heart
This exceptional limited edition ticks to the rhythm of the 80 caliber with the latest technical innovations. A hairspring made of NivachronTM, which is particularly resistant to shock and magnetism, combined with a power reserve of up to 80 hours ensure excellent reliability. MIDO has also decided to finely decorate the oscillating weight of this Swiss automatic caliber, which is also engraved with the MIDO logo, with traditional Geneva stripes. The Commander “Circulo de Luz” Limited Edition celebrates the passage of time as a colorful celebration in honor of Mexico’s Día de Muertos.
