The brainchild of Markus Langes-Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board, Book of Dreams Volume 2 has Giovanna Engelbert as its Creative Director with art direction by Cabana Magazine – each season taking a new format.  Available as a limited edition of only 1,000 copies, it is a free-flowing, multi-purpose editorial project conceived to reveal the power of Swarovski crystals as an inventive tool, using fearlessly eccentric, opulently inventive image making.

Book of Dreams Volume 2 consists of 55 free-flowing loose images contained within a folder, like the sheets of an artist’s portfolio. The book cover comes in nine exclusive color variants, each a different shade of silk from Taroni, Italy’s renowned silk-weaving mill, and displays the title “Book of Dreams” delicately framed in hand-applied tonal Swarovski crystals. With ten chapters showcasing a variety of printing techniques designed to give the book a distinctive haptic feel, the result is an engaging narrative that is as visual as it is tactile. Treatments include high-gloss varnish, embossed frames, hand-applied color swatches and real feathers. The creative power of Swarovski crystals is unleashed in a succession of surreal glimpses of beach scenarios mixed with painterly collages, sculptural accumulations of colored rocks, and compositions of fabric swatches that recall an atelier. Gardening is a leitmotif that blooms throughout the book in intriguing images, such as crystals glistening on cactuses that give their spiky leaves a touch of unexpected glamour. Flame-haired supermodel Mariacarla Boscono is the protagonist of the main story – an eccentric mash-up of bright hues, sparkle and print, captured by legendary photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. The overall effect is a mesmerizing intoxication of creativity.

“For the creative concept behind Book of Dreams Volume 2, I was inspired by the classic artist’s portfolio, which we filled with an eclectic selection of pictures and illustrations that once again unveil surprising new facets of the Swarovski Crystal universe,” says Giovanna Engelbert.

Book of Dreams Volume 2,” adds Markus Langes-Swarovski, “is the embodiment of Swarovski’s creative DNA, summed up as: be curious, be nonconformist, explore new frontiers, challenge assumptions. This translates into a sensory treat that blends heritage and contemporary imagery through the use of photography, illustration and graphics in an explosion of crystals, colors and patterns.”

Cabana Magazine’s Martina Mondadori Sartogo and Christoph Radl commented: “This new volume is a collection of many different images describing the sparkling world of Swarovski Crystals ingeniously interpreted by photographers, artists and illustrators. In the first volume we took our readers on a journey through the images in a ready-made order; this time the images are loosely collected in a folder so that everybody will be able to construct his or her own personal journey in the world of Swarovski dreams. Also, in this way, everyone can select their favorites and pin them in the best spot at home”.

Book of Dreams Volume 2 was unveiled in Paris on the evening of February 28 with a cocktail reception at Hôtel D’Évreux on Place Vendôme. An atmospheric installation set up across various rooms at the Hôtel enabled visitors to immerse themselves in the stories, themes and suggestions featured in the pages of the book. Guests included Markus Langes-Swarovski, Giovanna Engelbert, Mariacarla Boscono, Martina Mondadori, Giambattista Valli, Mary Katrantzou, Stefano Tonchi, Alessandro Dell’aqua, Lorenzo Serafini, Susy Menkes, Derek Blasberg and many more.
