Scott Magnus – „The Phoenix“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

I am a pop artist from Oldham, Manchester ( UK ). I create indie pop / rock songs which are brought to life with trap and hyper-pop production.

I am an outspoken supporter of people with disabilities, particularly those with learning difficulties, because I myself have ADHD, Autism and Dyspraxia. I turn the experiences that I encounter as someone with disabilities into music that can heal, embolden and inspire anyone facing difficult obstacles. It is my mission to help people overcome their challenges as I do.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I have recently released my single ‚The Phoenix‘. Like a phoenix rising from the flames, the aptly named new single „The Phoenix“ was written after I decided to move on from a job that wasn’t aligned with my neurodiversity. With a new found sense of excitement and experience under my belt, I emerged from the old job a new and better man.

My discipline had been forged in a fire of adversity and I felt like London had so much opportunity to offer me and I was ready to make the most of it! I didn’t stop making mistakes as they are part of having learning difficulties and being human for that matter, but this song was an expression of my positive attitude upon making mistakes and receiving criticism.

My next single ‚Lone Wolf‘ is out at the end of August. This is one of my favourite songs that I have recorded and it explores loneliness, friendship and the power of introversion.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?

I trained at Rose Bruford Drama School on their Acting Course.

I started writing songs from the age of 15.

I combine traditional songwriting with modern trap and electronic pop production.

I don’t think of vocal melodies in my head like I used to anymore, instead I hear them out loud by singing and record them on my phone and I’ve created my best songs via this method.

My best music is usually found when I have intense emotions, an epiphany and always when I have something to say.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

Levi and Zara.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

Like a phoenix rising from the flames, the aptly named new single „The Phoenix“ was written after I decided to move on from a job that wasn’t aligned with my neurodiversity. With a new found sense of excitement and experience under my belt, I emerged from the old job a new and better man.

My discipline had been forged in a fire of adversity and I felt like London had so much opportunity to offer me and I was ready to make the most of it! I didn’t stop making mistakes as they are part of having learning difficulties and being human for that matter, but this song was an expression of my positive attitude upon making mistakes and receiving criticism.

My debut single “Diamond In The Rough” was about owning your mistakes, accepting yourself for who you are and knowing that you are capable of great things. The song became like a counselling session where I expressed all of my feelings and concerns; to feeling empowered, confident and determined to be better and most importantly, seeing the value that I have; loving myself regardless of what others think of me – I think this journey is reflected in the song!.

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

I can act and I’m particularly good at improv comedy where I showcase my ability with accents and my ability to go off on crazy tangents playing kooky characters!

7. Being on stage feels like….!

Intimacy – connecting to an audience with my music and performance and allowing my art to move them in a direct way is euphoric!

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

I learnt to play guitar from a guitar teacher who would come into school. I learnt to sing at first by singing in school musicals and later in a more formal way at drama school and with private singing teachers afterwards. I taught myself how to write songs from trial and error and from Youtube.

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

What is the overall theme and story of your up and coming EP Comeback stronger?

As the name ‚Comeback Stronger‘ suggests, my EP is about coming back to a better, stronger version of yourself after making a mistake, being in a rut and being knocked down. I think this is a pivotal process that we all have to go through in life in order to progress and it is certainly something I have had to go through after having faced many setbacks often due to having learning difficulties. Receiving so many of these setbacks led me to believe I wasn’t capable of anything and had no future and I was in a real rut. For a while I lived out that belief system which had a detrimental effect on my life. When things got too bad I eventually had to make a change and since then I have dedicated myself to putting my life together and pursuing a music career which has transformed my confidence and my life for the better.
