You’ve just done something a little wild and daring. You’ve bought your first motorcycle. You’ve taken your motorcycle riding course to get your license. It’s time to test out what you learned as you feel the thrill of riding in the open on your bike. Before you head out for your first adventure, make sure you know on the road safety tips that will help new motorcyclists like you.

Wear a Helmet and the Proper Riding Gear

Put a good helmet approved by the Department of Transportation at the top of your list. It doesn’t matter if your state has a helmet law or not. This is a vital piece of protective equipment that will keep your head, face, and brain safe. You should also wear proper riding gear. Purchase a leather jacket or other riding jacket that will protect you if you are involved in an accident. You should always wear pants and long sleeves. You can find lightweight jackets for the warmer weather. Don’t forget boots and gloves. You need to give your body as much protection as you possibly can. While the freedom of the wind in your face is part of what draws many people to a motorcycle, remember that there is nothing between you and anything that has an impact with you. The protective gear you wear could save your life.

Always Keep an Eye on the Weather

A good day could quickly turn into a disaster with a change in the weather. Watch the forecast in your riding area. Pack rain gear in case you are caught in a storm. You are more likely to hydroplane or lose control on two wheels as opposed to four. The best thing you can do is get off the road if precipitation begins. Take cover and wait it out. If you must keep going, slow down. Keep a close watch on the drivers around you. It is going to be harder to see you. Rain, hail, ice, and snow can lead to a call for a motorcycle accident lawyer.

Do Everything You Can to be Seen by Other Drivers

Drivers are mentally prepared to see cars and trucks. They tend to miss motorcycles. You can help yourself to be more visible when you are on the road. Your headlight should always be on. If you have a radio, turn it on. Others could hear you before they see you. Consider wearing a bright helmet or jacket that no one is going to miss. You should also keep plenty of space between yourself and others on the road. Be aware of where a driver’s blind spot is. Keep your bike out in the open.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings and the Road

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of confidence when you go for a ride. You need to always concentrate. Watch for potholes, cracks, heaves, and bumps that could throw you off balance. Gravel, dirt, and debris in the road could make you spill your bike on its side. Scan for animals on either side of the road, especially if you are riding at night. If you are in a rural or suburban area, this is when wildlife tends to come out. Take great care at intersections. Don’t run yellow lights. Someone else might do the same and put you at risk. Always watch for vehicles pulling out from a road or a driveway. When riding your motorcycle there’s always a chance a vehicle hasn’t seen you and will try changing lanes. Slow down and be ready to move over in case they haven’t noticed you.

Check Your Bike Before You Head Out

Don’t let a problem with your bike take you by surprise. Make sure all your fuel levels are good. Check your tire pressure and make sure your tires have a good tread. You also need to make sure your directional lights and headlights are working properly. Take your bike in for its recommended tune-ups as well to make sure it’s good to go.

Riding a motorcycle can make you fall in love. It is a great way to take a road trip for the adventurous spirit. Always put your safety at the top of your list when you are getting ready to ride. You want to enjoy your new pastime for years to come.
