The MB&F M.A.D.Gallery is thrilled to present a third and final ‘Nixie Machine’ by Frank Buchwald – a sculptural table clock which displays the time thanks to fascinating old-school Nixie tubes.
The first two iterations of the series – which were presented in 2015 and 2017 – were extremely successful and were sold out in no time. Reason why our long-time Friend Frank Buchwald, whose work has been at the M.A.D.Gallery since the very beginning, has decided to go for a ‘Last Dance’ with an edition of 18 pieces.
The Nixie Machine III is made of solid stainless steel and all components have been exclusively hand-sanded and polished. Like its predecessors, it has been entirely crafted by hand: from design, construction, and detailed workmanship of the clock to the six Nixie tubes.
Originally introduced in the 1950s, the Nixie tubes in this new edition are manufactured by Dalibor Farny, who had already handcrafted the tubes for Nixie Machine II. Each glass tube is filled with a low-pressure neon-based gas and includes a wire-mesh anode and layered cathodes; a separate cathode is needed for every numeral from 0 to 9.
