1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!
My name is Joe Sparrow and I am a singer, songwriter, and producer from San Francisco living in Los Angeles. I make moody pop/r&b music exploring the darker side of sex, lust, and relationships.
2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!
My new single “Tremble” dropped two weeks ago and the video one week ago. I highly encourage you all to check them out. I will be releasing several more singles this year with accompanying videos and live acoustic videos leading up to my first full-length album dropping at the end of the year. All the singles and songs on the album are lyrically, sonically, and conceptually connected. I’m really excited to share this music with the world.
3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!
- I am a fully independent artist.
- Every part of my music from songwriting to performances to production is done by me. I also creative direct my project. My artistry is a true reflection of me.
- My music explores my struggles with sex and love addiction and parts of myself I find uncomfortable talking about even to close friends.
- I was the lead singer of a touring alternative band called Solwave. I have played 300+ live shows in my life.
- I have written for other artists most notably Zhu and Stephen. I have written over 500 songs in my life.
4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?
All Saints or what I would call a Neo-James-Dean style.
5. Do you have bad habits? A guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit?
I have thankfully kicked my worst habits which were drinking and drugs. I have been sober now for seven years. I still struggle with sex addiction at times which is a significant topic my music dives into. I can also have bad habits around my sleep schedule where I slip into being almost completely nocturnal. A more casual guilty pleasure I can’t seem to quit would be eating an entire sharing-size bag of kettle chips in one sitting.
6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?
I am a fairly good public speaker and debater. I’m a great dog foster – I’ve fostered around 20 puppies. I’m also a pretty good free pseudo-therapist for friends and family.
7. Being on stage feels like….!
Being on stage feels like a roller coaster. The lead-up is overwhelming fear and anxiety. Then usually about halfway into the first song, that energy turns to intense excitement and invigoration. If you are lucky, eventually it can move to bliss and ecstasy. Playing live is such a unique experience and I really miss it.
8. Must Have – and No-Go in your Wardrobe! – Favorite Fashion Brand and Fragrance?
Must have in my wardrobe: leather jacket and boots. No-go in my wardrobe: polos, cargo shorts, khakis.
My favorite fashion brand: All Saints and Zara.
Fragrance: none – keep it au naturel.
9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls
Who is your favorite non-musical inspiration?
Director Stanley Kubrick. His mastery, obsession with detail, and unshakeable commitment to his vision are all qualities I admire and attempt to emulate. He also layers many different meanings into his films and makes the audience work for them rather than making them obvious. I find everything about his craft and movies immensely inspiring.
