Gaspar Narby – „So Bored“ + Exclusive Interview

1. Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!

Hey, I’m Gaspar Narby, I’m a singer-songwriter and producer based in London.

2. Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!

I just released So Bored, the second single off of my upcoming EP (out early 2022). We shot a music video on 16mm film, directed by Theo Le Sourd (who’s worked with James Blake, Vogue and Victoria’s Secret to name a few), which conveys perfectly the absurdity and sense of meaninglessness in the lyrics. I got to hang out with llamas and walk around in an empty olympic swimming pool and just for this I think it’s worth a watch! We shot five videos in total this summer, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

3. Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!

1) I write, produce and mix all of my songs myself.

2) I hated piano when I started, aged 6. It’s only when I started writing cheesy love songs that it really clicked (I was 13 by then).

3) I record a lot of my demos on my father’s old cassette tape dictaphone from the 80s, as it forces me to commit to ideas.

4) French is my mother tongue and I read all of Marcel Proust (still unsure whether that makes me cool or really uncool, a bit of both i think).

5) I go to therapy once a week.

4. What fashion style or brand would best describe your music?

I’ve been really clicking with Lucy and Yak’s colours and shapes and am wearing them to play live and in So Bored’s video (please sponsor me!). I want something colourful, something that bends the usual expectation of masculinity.

5. Tell us more about your songs! Topics! Message!?

The upcoming EP as a whole is an exploration on vulnerability as a way to find strength. I drew a lot of inspiration from the parts of me and the world that I dislike, or that I’m scared of – death and the absurdity of life, depression, how bad I can sometimes be at expressing my feelings, my need to feel seen, etc. I then try to have fun with it, twist it, make it mine. It’s a way of owning it I suppose!

6. Beside music, do you have any special talents?

My homemade pizza dough is getting pretty serious!

7. Being on stage feels like….!

Such an amazing way to connect, with the audience, with the songs, and with myself as well actually.

8. How did you learn to sing/ to write/ to play??

Trial and error. A lot of errors. They’re the best thing I’ve ever done!

9. A question you’d like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls

Who are all the wonderful collaborators that allowed you to make this project?

Lena Vallat is the creative director for the series of music videos, on top of being my partner in real life – absolute superhero. She developed all the visual ideas to compliment my lyrics and songs and i’m so inspired by her work. Elaine Xu did the production design and is a tape wizard, I promise. And everyone in Jura, the part of Switzerland I grew up in. The whole community helped us so much! People let us shoot in a cinema, in a pool, on a huge parking lot, inside a church, etc. all for free. Thank you!
