Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!
Hey! Thanks for having me! I’m Denis Coleman, I’m a singer, songwriter, producer and musician! My musical style is R&B and dance influenced pop.
Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tour dates, new videos?!
My new single All I Wanna Know drops 20th September! I’m also dropping an EP sometime this fall, yet to be announced. I’m going to be touring the UK with New Hope Club and then going out on another tour with a great group, but I can’t tell you who it is yet. I’ll be releasing music videos and loads of behind the scenes tour diaries as well over the next few months!
Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!
I write all my own music. I would never sing a song that I didn’t create myself (unless it was a feature) and I find it super important that I can relate personally to everything I perform.
I play instruments too! As well as singing and song writing, I also play the violin, viola, piano, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, drums and produce music. Before singing, my main focus was violin and composing (I even had one of my pieces played at Royal Albert Hall once, which was crazy!), and so I always try to add a level of musicality to every song I release.
I’m very focused! Sometimes when I’m in the studio writing music I forget to eat and drink for hours on end and come out of the session with a headache and a rumbling stomach but (usually) a good song too!
I’m very influenced by hip hop. Even though I don’t rap in most of my songs, hip hop music, flow and culture is something which inspires me every day. As a kid, my mom always played me the classics from people like the notorious B. I. G. to Tupac, and I try to put a little of that soul and vibe into my music.
Lastly, I find it really important to try to uplift and inspire people with my music. Life isn’t easy, and I try to brighten people’s days as much as possible. Most of my tracks are fun love songs or some type of self-exploration and I always try to put a secondary level of meaning in my tracks.
What can we expect 2019 from you?
It’s going to be massive! New tracks, huge tours, great videos, collaborations…stay tuned because every second it’s getting bigger and better and even, I don’t know what could happen!
Do you have bad habits? A guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit.
I’m a really slow eater! I’m not picky at all, I’m actually quite a foodie and I eat enough to feed about 50 grown men but I’m really slow! It drives everyone crazy, especially because I eat so much. On tour it’s been a bit tricky but I’m slowly improving and I’m a lot quicker now than I used to be. Really inconvenient though
Beside music, do you have any special talents?
I can turn my tongue into a w! Haha, to be honest, music is my main talent, but I also really enjoy maths and history and economics and do quite well academically so you could say I have a talent for that!
Being on stage feels like…
It’s mad! A combination of nerves and excitement, confidence and simultaneously the awareness that everyone else in the room is judging you, it’s really great. For me, I think it’s one of the best experiences in the world.
Must Have – and No-Go in your Wardrobe! – Favourite Fashion Brand and Fragrance?
Hoodie! Always got to have my hoodie. I feel like I’m only half me if I don’t have a hoodie.
My No-Go has got to be cropped sweatpants. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen these, but they are quite in with UK fashion and they are just not my vibe. I think UK style is great, especially urban style, but these pants are just one thing I can’t get my head around, like why would someone wear sweatpants that only go three quarters of the down the leg? My ankles going to freeze! Lol.
As for my favourite brand, that’s a hard one as there are so many great brands, but I think I would have to say Supreme. As a fragrance, in my opinion the subtler the better. I hate heavy colognes and perfumes and really like anything just strong enough to mask any unpleasant odours. Anything more and I start sneezing the house dow
