Building upon his increasingly successful solo career, Dappy has partnered with Abra Cadabra (‘Abz’) to bring us an energetic drill flavour titled ‘BOLO’ (out 11th June). Taken from his upcoming tape, ‘Fortune’, the feature sets a high bar for what we can expect from the project.
The track features familiar, progressive drill percussion and an ominous piano melody, providing fertile ground for Dappy to lace with an experimental influence, showcasing harder flows and his signature sing-song finesse. Punctuated with references to his colourful career so far, BOLO sees Dappy draw distinction between himself and his competition, balanced with a self-awareness consistent with the message of his April release, ‘Wounds’. Flowing back and forth throughout, Abra Cadabra’s gravelly, rhythmic delivery adds a significant edge to the track and contrasts with Dappy’s melodic flows to make for a dynamic listen.
The collaboration is a meeting of two generations of UK music; Dappy having been part of the British cultural fabric since his successful career with N-Dubz in the 2000s, and Abra Cadabra having solidified his place in the scene with a dominant 2020. He had an impressive rise to fame alongside OFB – supercharged by a MOBO-winning collaboration with mentors Krept and Konan on ‘Robbery Remix’ in 2016, and he continues to demonstrate his versatility and promise alongside industry giants and up-and-comers alike.
Dappy, too, shows no signs of slowing down despite his many accolades, including 4X platinum sales and plenty of chart-time. He has over 170 million solo views on YouTube and boasts north of 1.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify. His debut solo release hit No.1 in the Official Charts, followed by another Top 10 with ‘Rockstar’ featuring Brian May, maintaining an impressive hold on the UK market.
