Emerging WA band Cloning have released their ethereal new single All Rise, an introspective track that questions morality and is influenced by Nordic mythology. The group have also released an impressive self-made cosmic claymation film clip to accompany the song. To celebrate the release of All Rise, Cloning will be playing an exclusive show at the Indian Ocean Hotel in Scarborough on March 13.
All Rise pays homage to triphop auteurs Portishead while also evoking influences from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds to Radiohead. Recorded and mixed by Dave Parkin (Gyroscope, Karnivool) and mastered by Brian Lucey (Cage The Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood), this atmospheric track is the perfect soundtrack to a warm, hazy summer, with shining synthesisers, ample mandolin, cinematic guitar and idiosyncratic vocals.
Speaking on the intricate meaning behind the track, guitarist and lead vocalist Felix Parker says, “All Rise is about how groups of people can think their intentions are purer than they actually are, and end up committing morally questionable acts in the name of their chosen cause. It’s also about what gets left in the wake of pursuing a goal and how noble intentions can be corrupted by the pursuit of this goal. The imagery in the lyrics is influenced by Nordic mythology and stories about the Yggdrasil which is a mythical ash tree at the centre of the cosmos. I read way too much as a kid and a lot of that just seems to naturally flow into my lyrics.”
Hello, thank you for your time, please introduce yourself in a few words!
Hi we are Cloning! We’re four friends from Perth, Australia who make alternative Rock music influenced by bands like Radiohead, Portishead and more! Felix sings and plays guitar, Jack plays drums, Nic plays bass and Bevan plays guitar.
Please give us an update about – new single, new album, tourdates, new videos?!
We’ve just released our new song ‚All Rise‘ and its been really well received so far – with lots of press coverage and community radio support in Australia. We made our own claymation music video for the song and it has over 60,000 views on youtube so far!
Last year we released our debut EP ‚Pillars of Salt‘ and toured Australia for the first time. This was a big step for us because where we live in Perth, Western Australia is so isolated from the rest of Australia!
Name 5 things we all should know about you as an artist?!
1. We like all kinds of music from really commercial pop to experimental noise rock, we aren’t fussy.
2. When writing our own music we try to make it as unique as we can. Because we like so many styles of music we really want our songs to combine all the styles we love to make something which sounds fresh.
3. We eat way too much pizza
4. We write our music by layering recordings on top of each-other then spending months rearranging them in Felix’s home studio (singer and guitarist). We’re very obsessive with our music and we’ll often re-write our parts numerous times before we’re completely happy with them.
5. We design most of our own visuals, from the artwork to the music videos.
What can we expect 2020 from you?
We have lots of new music ready to release so we’ll be releasing music consistently throughout the whole year. You’ll also see some more music videos from us and we are hoping to play more shows in the Eastern Australian states.
Do you have bad habits? A guilty pleasure you cant seem to quit?
Yes its our pizza habit. Every band rehearsal is pretty much a pizza night.
Felix: Our pizza addictions. Admittedly thats mostly my fault because I’m addicted to Pizza and also a fussy eater. So whenever we go out to eat Pizza is often the best option!
Beside music, do you have any special talents?
Bevan – I can fit 152ml of water in my mouth. The average amount for a human is 120ml. Because I do have quite a big mouth.
Nic – I can translate the indecipherable and confusing ramblings that Bevan and Felix have together whilst we are writing music.
Felix – Powerlifting my sofa cushions. Other than that my only talent is music, I guess thats why I’m relying on it working as a career haha.
Jack – I can juggle three balls at once. Sometimes four but usually three is my forte.
Being on stage feels like….!
Really rewarding! Theres a sense of validation we get when a new song is received well by an audience. For us its the pay off after months working really hard writing and recording our songs.
Must Have – and No-Go in your Wardrobe! – Favorite Fashion Brand and Fragrance?
Bevan – a stripped shirt for my essential and silky boxers for a no go.
Jack – Silky boxers for a must have and horizontally patterned shirts for a no go.
Nic – A pair of boots as a must have and a fedora as a no go
Felix – A colourful button up shirt is a must have and shorts are a no go because I always wear jeans.
A question youd like to answer, but never been asked in an interview before?! + Answer pls:)
Which country outside of your own would you love to play in?
Germany! Because the lovely people from Twisted Male Mag are from there! 😉
