1. Please describe yourself and your brand and its evolution in the past seasons.
We are Ben & Jordan, two brothers from Sydney Australia with a background in global advertising, design and marketing. We make mens leggings design for risk takers and rule breakers. The Kapow Brand was born at Burning Man in the Nevada desert when we noticed 35,000 men wearing ill-fitting women’s leggings because they couldn’t find cool ones for guys. So we went away and designed them.Our brand champions looking good, having fun, and standing out in a crowd. Today our leggings are worn by BASE jumpers, rock stars, bodybuilders, yogis, acrobats, models, athletes, and everyday heroes all over the world.
2. Best and toughest part of designing a menswear collection.
The best part is having no limits on how creative we can get. We’re owner-operated which means no boardrooms or corporate hierarchy watering down our ideas. The toughest part is finding a production partner who can bring our wild creations to life.
3. What sources of inspiration are your biggest influence?
We pull inspiration from literally anywhere. This might be a sweet art print we saw in a barbershop, or a cool t-shirt some guy on the bus was wearing. We stay plugged into pop culture, especially the sport and music scenes, and we also get a huge amount of inspo from our customers – they write in with requests, ask for their dream designs, and tag us on Instagram wearing epic outfits that give us a ton of style ideas.
4. What was your favorite collection so far?
The new Performance Range we launched a few months ago. Men’s compression tights traditionally come in black ,and we turned that on its head by producing high quality athletic leggings in show-stopping designs with names like Jungle Funk, Hyperdrive, and Star Lord.
5. How much of your success do you credit to the education you had?
Our background is in design and marketing for international brands which definitely helped in the business sense, but it also gave us a good idea of what we DON’T want to be – which is overly corporate and taking ourselves too seriously. Most of our success we put down to finding and working with the right people.
6. What genre of music best describes your collection?
Music that challenges the establishment and makes you feel good and strut your stuff, which means everything from electronica to punk to soul. At the moment we’re vibing pretty hard on “Off White Limousine” by Client Liaison.
7. How do you choose your models for your shows and campaigns?
We normally go for men with attitude that wear leggings like they were born in them. We’ve used models from London to New York, Canada to Romania. For our upcoming campaign we’re looking at “real guy” models, which means a move away from the tall, good-looking poster boys most brands use.
8. Do you have any favorite male models?
Craig F. Henry is a total boss. He’s a stuntman, actor, and all-round hellman who lives life on rails. He rocks the Kapow brand values of being brave and being unboring.
9. Where do you plan to take your brand next?
Up, up and away. We’ve got a futuristic metallic range coming later this year, as well as an epic new range of performance leggings incorporating incredible fabrics, textures and patterns – there’s nothing like them in existence. We’re also developing some new non-leggings products that we can’t tell you about just yet, but they’ll be on the scene later this year.
10. Beside fashion – do you have any special talents?
Travel. Between us we’ve been to 100+ countries. Any chance we get, we’re on the road visiting new places – from surf safaris in Indonesia to year-long sabbaticals to places we couldn’t spell if you paid us to.
